A little over three months ago i injured my back. I wasn't doing anything stressful at the the time i literally went to sit down and i had excruciating pain up and down my right side with some numbness in fingers and toes. It subsided to just my lower back but remained to the point i couldn't even stand up straight. Over the next week or so the pain would radiate down both my legs and then about 2 weeks after this started i started to get numbness in my left leg down to my knee. I have been out of work since this has happened because i cannot even drive because I am also getting muscle spasms in my back and legs, and I cannot stand sit walk or basically stay in the same position for more then 15 mins without the pain greatly increasing. So far what I've done is:

Went to my ortho and had an MRI of lower spine.
MRI only showed very slight stenosis but doctor said that is not the cause of the pain
Prescribed physical therapy.
No help at all. 12 visit and insurance would not approve more
referred to a pain management doctor
given a spinal epidural. Did not help with pain at all
Referred to one of the best nero surgeons in the state
not sure what is wrong everything looks normal
got script for EMG
came back normal
Script for two mri's lower and mid back
mid back denied by insurance and waiting on results of lower back

All the test have so far come back basically normal and my ortho keeps telling me it should just get better. I am at a loss on what to do because it is not getting better and just doing these test is killing me. Trying to sit in a car to get to a doctor, staying still for a test the pain gets so bad i am usually in tears. Now on top of it all my job and insurance are fighting me every step of the way.

I'm a 26 year old male and I am basically confined to my bed or a reclining chair and even then i cant stay there for long because of the pain. I sleep about 3 hours a night because the pain either keeps me awake or wakes me up. I've been on narcotics, spasm meds, steroids, even sleep aids none of them help at all.

I honestly just don't know what to do. I want to get better but nothing is working and i don't know where to go from here.

  • Just an update on my issue. The second mri came back normal as well. Neuro surgeon can't help me. Went to chiropractor and they said it feels like something is going on but they can be definitive because all tests are normal. Now waiting to see primary to try and get blood work, and going to a neurologist to see if it's all starting in the brain.

Saw my ortho today and he told me that as of Dec 11th he will no longer keep me out of work because from what he has seen from the tests there is nothing medically wrong with me. I am still in the same amount of pain and numbness as before, there has been no improvement. I don't know what I can do at this point because I still cannot drive sit stand walk (all greatly required for my job), and he is getting ready to clear me. I am running out of doctors to go to in my area. Most are over 20 miles away and I am unable to sit in a car that long to even get to them.

It has been 4 months and I am no better and still have no answers.

and the final answer is You should not be having the pain you say you are having

Thats always a hard one to swallow.

There are only two sides to a situation like this

    1) You have pain and you need to see another doctor, another opinion to help you pinpoint your problem.

    2) You have the pain, but there is no medical reason why, so then you may need to seek other avenues to understand that.
