Two months post-op 3 level fusion, lingering side effects from surgery

I had my surgery nearly two months ago. I had S1-L3 fused (yikes) and was out for 7 hours. Docs did a posterior and anterior approach. For two to three weeks after surgery, I was pretty loopy from the effects of anesthesia. Gratefully, I am almost 100% pain free. Occasional tylenol or muscle relaxer is all I need. However, I have 3 lingering symptoms since surgery and I am trying to make sense of it.

My heart rate has been terribly high. The docs have put me on some beta blockers and I have had some *limited* relief. But, heart rate still running high.

My sleep is all messed up. My body feels tired but I just can't sleep. My brain doesn't feel tired. Of course, that could change and then I go through a cycle of lots of sleeping.

Last is my inability to control my body temperature. I dress for the weather. If I feel chilly, I will put on a sweater. In a few minutes I am roasting again. My extremities get cold but my core is all over the place. Any sleep I get is interrupted by me waking up with my hair and clothes drenched in sweat, I have to change. Night time is a constant back and forth between adding a sheet, adding a blanket, taking them off, adding 3 blankets and so on.

Has anyone ever had or heard of any of these symptoms? Are there any solutions?

  • I an not sure about your experiences but some things to think about. Are you on any prescriptions? Norco and other high pain medications have made me wake up in sweats around my neck and odd experiences. I unfortunately suffer from insomnia after any anesthesia. I then am prescribed sleep medication which is addicting to most humans brains because it controls the sleep. So high blood pressure is dangerous and known to control body temperatures up and down. Talk to your doctor ASAP.
