I am worried I will not be able to do Band Camp because of it. I am worried also because my PT Office has not responded from the day I did my Evaluation which was on July 3rd. They said it would take 1 week to hear from them. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow. I am so worried I won't be able to Band Camp because I am not getting any pain relief. My legs and arms goes numb but my doctor said the numbness in my legs can't be from my neck. Is that true? I am just confused and worried about my future. Any Ideas what my outcome may look like? My doctor aslo said I will be parlayzed is that true?

Here is my story:
I am new to this site. I am 18 and what I go by on the internet is my nickname.. Koyko.. I wouldl like advice and things for you people. I will try to check this often as I can. I am usaully on the computer a lot. So here is my story.

At 16 and in Janurary 2007, I got hurt by this girl, Jazmine. Jazmine pushed back of my head down with her full body weight. We were at school when this happened. So I went sat down and started crying by the bus lane because we were waiting for the buses. I was in so much pain, I was holding my neck and crying. It was first load, so I had to deal with this until third load. Well, when I got home I told my mom what had happened. She told me get and Ice Pack put it on my neck and get one to put on my head and go lay down. So I did. I had homework to do, so I got up about an hour and half later because by then the ice pack wasn't cold anymore. So I done my homework. My mom came in and asked me if I felt better. I told no.

Well. In May, I turned 17. I went to my doctor. She said it was an extreme case of whiplash. Then I was put on meds by my doctor. I on Parafron which is a musle relaxor. I am also on an anti-inflamatory. I can never remeber it's name.

Then in December 2007, I still was complaining. My legs was going numb and my shoulder was hurt ing and my neck was very stiff and my arms/hands would go numb and swell. My granny knew something was unusal because I was hurting so often and I never complained this much.

Finally, in April 2008, I got my MRI done. My doctor said I had Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD). It was mostly in C4 - C6. C4 - C5 was degenerating and C6 is buldging. I was scared when I found that out. I also had a thyroid problem that showed up during the MRI. So we got more research done on that. I have Hypoplasia in my Thyroid. Hypoplasia is where one side of your thyroid is undeveloped. So we found that out, nothing was done for that though. In, April we asked the doctor see me for a 2nd time. He said no on June 2nd.

In May, I turned 18, We are getting ready for answers to the Cervical DDD.

Thanks for the help,
Jess 8)

  • Anyone have any ideas?
  • Jess, so sorry for your neck! I have not heard of leg numbness being related to the cervical spine, only arm, but I am just a patient, not a doctor. As for paralysis, I believe that is the risk when things hit the spinal cord and damage the nerves. But PT, surgery, etc. - the goal is to make room in there for your spinal cord so you are NOT paralyzed. Any chance you can see a specialist, like an orthopedist or neurosurgeon? I really hope you can get to camp :)
  • Hiya Chicagogal.

I was able to go to band camp. Had to come home on Wendsday due to pain in my neck.
  • I am happy for you that you got to go to band camp because it sounded so important to you. At least you got to go for part of it, even if you had to leave early. It is so important to have activities that interest us and round out our lives and just plain make us happy. For you to have health issues interfering with that at such a young age has got to be terribly frustrating!

Jess, since I am not a doctor I cannot answer on whether you will be paralyzed or not. But I do know that if I were told that, I'd be rushing out for a second opinion! We are all different, and our our tests are open to interpretation. Also, people react differently to the same conditions. For instance, my doctors say I have severe lumbar stenosis and I should be in pain but I am not. DDD is a normal condition of aging and most people have it. It's just a matter of time. Although yes, you were injured and are having to deal with this and other problems at a young age.

I'm sorry you're hurting but please don't despair yet! Do your footwork, get other opinions, learn all you can, hang out here and discuss it, vent, whatever. There are a whole bunch of us here willing to help you. Take care of yourself and try to have a positive attitude. It makes a big difference.

  • Thank you for the comment Teri. I am trying to get. Dr. Carstens to talk to me when I see him again during band. His wife is the Band Nurse, Ms. Arlene, she is the one that sent me home in the first place. Well, gotta go! bye!
