Lumbar Spasm or Minor Slip Disc

Hi all,

First of all appreciate such a wonderful forum and website that provides tons of good advice on Spinal related issues.

I stay in Bombay,India and out here even though there are many, many doctors/surgeons/specialist its kind of really very commercial and the way they interact with patient is very business-minded. And lot of people are happy as well to blindly agree and follow what the doctor/specialist says to them. And here lies the problem as well, as most of them just do high level diagnosis and stamp their word on it and we cant even discuss with them and understand the exact cause as they have too many patients waiting and they dont like patients who question them alot.

Coming to my problem, I am 37 year old software engineer and knowing sedentary nature of my profession, I very well spend good 1-1.5 hrs daily doing cardio, running and some light weight trainings. I weight around 74 kgs . On past Saturday, my wife asked me to push a heavy piece of furniture and on very next day while playing (cricket), I collided with near 100 kg fellow. But on both occasions I didnt feel any back pain. On Monday I did go out for jogging and then to work. Its at night that while I was sitting in slightly bad posture for nearly 40 mins, I started feeling some back stiffness. And within couple of hrs Pain became very acute. With help of some pain killers did see through night and very next day morning went to an Orthopedic. However pain was only in my lower back and it was getting severe when I was breathing in. NO pain radiating to my hips/legs, only lower back.

Doctor just looked at me ( I was having good amount of pain) and he said that I have minor Slip Disc and if I dont take care, I might end up in big back problem. He gave me some muscle relaxant, a steriod and asked me COMPLETE BED REST for five days. As I tried asking him how he diagnosed this, he got annoyed and asked me to go back and take rest.

Very next day all pain had gone albeit some stiffness in my back. So after two days I started working on my laptop with intermediate 2 hr break for taking 30 min bed rest. And also stopped taking medicines as I wasnt having any pain,

After 4 days today when I went to doctor, he said I am not supposed to be standing and coming to him. I should be resting for next 4 days else my back problem will be lifetime.

First of all I just wanted him to take scan and help me understand what was the actual problem with my back that caused that acute pain. My research on net makes me believe it was a spasm which might have got delayed reaction after my weekend excursions.

So Just wanted you guys to help me get some idea. There is no pain in my back , it was very acute (Stabbing) for 2 days but after that there has been no pain. Should I continue lying down on my bed for next few days as doctor suggested to address the issue for once and for all, I should rest and scans will only be done after 10 days. At present there is slight stiffness but then I have been sitting and sleeping for last 5 days (which is very unlike my routine)

And finally was it (or is it) a spasm or slip disc..
