Hi everyone. I'm new to this site but really needed some support and to talk to other people who have had issues with pain. I have had pain in my right leg now for almost 8 weeks. It started of as just a simple pain in my calf. Just felt a bit tight but I could carry on as normal and didn't notice it very often. Well it couldn't be more opposite now! For the last week I've had excruciating pain in my right leg. It was aching/sore and difficult to stand on. Now I can barely walk or stand without a tight pain in my leg. My ankle constantly aches and I have pins andneedles in my leg all the time. My leg constantly aches and feels like it's being set fire too. My bum aches too. Th Dr just said it's sciatica from a slipped disc and should go with rest. I've been on loads of medication but am currently taking codeine sulphate, paracetamol and nurofren with a butr ans patch. So far nothings helped and the pain is breaking me. I can't work or sleep it's so severe and I keep on thinking will it ever go? Is this my life??? Please is there anyone out there who has suffered like this I could really do with some help and advice.

  • Hi, there are lots of people on here who have been through similar things and can offer support! Has your doctor referred you for a scan? It will be helpful for you to get a diagnosis so you know exactly what's wrong & whether it is definitely a herniated disc. I know exactly how you feel - I've been in similar way for same amount of time & it's so draining & can be very lovely & scary if you don't know what's wrong. Do keep strong, the very acute pain will go & this doesn't mean that this will be the way you are forever by any means. I think your next step is to really speak with your doctor about getting a referral to a specialist. Even though they may then continue with conservative treatments, getting a referral & scan can take a while & you can always cancel it if you do feel better. Let us know how you get on.
  • Kfrost, I'm sorry for your troubles. I know exactly how you feel. I was also asking "is this my life?" just six days ago. I was in excruciating pain from sciatica that refused to be relieved. My left leg but all the symptoms you describe. I took pain pills, muscle relaxants, steroids, and ibuprofen but nothing helped. I couldn't sit, walk or stand without experiencing the worst pain of my life. I got an epidural injection 10 days ago and started taking Gabepentin. I now feel like I'm on the mend.

The good news is that you are not alone in your misery. The bad news is that it takes time to find the right treatment. I encourage you to be your own best health care advocate. Research medications. Many people find relief with nerve analgesics such as Lyrica and Gabepentin. An epidural injection is also something to consider. Are you in physical therapy? That might help. I have to credit PT for keeping me on my feet for the past five weeks. My thrice-weekly appointments were basically to provide me with enough relief to go to work but the consistency and frequency has helped build my core. And I also used the PT stretches whenever I needed to. They provided me with some relief when my pain was at its worst.

The thing about back problems is that, once you herniate a disc, you may never return to "normal" again. But lots of people manage to find a livable level of discomfort. Just hang in there.
