Hi I am an active 27 year old Male. I was in a car accident a year ago and I have been having trouble ever since. I have DDD at L4 and L5. I have never had nerve pain until recently. My lower back hurt me after the accident and I saw a physical therapist to strengthen my core. The pain seemed to go away, but not for long. My pain came back and I started seeing a chiropractor who ordered me and MRI. This didn't help much either. I then went to a specialist who suggested the microdiscectomy, but that I first try an ESI. Before I scheduled my ESI, I started rolling my ankle ALOT. After 3-4 days I lost the ability to walk properly. I developed what is called "foot drop" and I cannot push off with my foot correctly and if I step on something that is not level I will roll my ankle every time. Following the foot drop I've been having sciatic nerve pain that seems to getting worse at a slow pace. I've had a very bad flare up that has lasted hours before and I would like to get some help making my decision for surgery before I end up crying myself to sleep because of the nerve pain. The ESI didn't seem to help at all. Are there any downfalls going without surgery? I've heard the nerve can take a long time to heal and sometimes won't heal at all, being paralyzed? I've also heard the muscles being effected with my foot drop can be paralyzed. Any ideas or experience would be appreciated. Thanks.
