Sciatica with swelling

Hi everyone, I am so pleased just to be able to chat to sympathetic sufferers that in itself is cathartic, thank you.
Twelve months ago I fell backwards down a couple of stone steps catching my upper left leg badly on the edge of the step which resulted in a large bruise and the expected stiffness and pain. The bruise went after 3-4 weeks and I went to my doctors to show her as I was worried about how black and deep it looked, she told me it would go away on its own and just tested my hip flexers were okay. After a couple of months I returned as the site was still swollen and I was getting pain in the hip but she said it may take a year to heal and not to worry . I then insisted on an xray but that just showed the hip was not displaced but I have strained the tendon joining my leg to my hip. I was by now getting tingling and electric shocks in my left foot and pain in my lower back so I asked for an MRI scan but I was told it would be a years wait for that and a year wait to see a trauma specialist! (I live in Spain until next year and that's par for the course here). I do not have private insurance as I am in the Spanish system but I decided to go private and see a trauma doctor which has been a disaster. He examined me and said there was nothing wrong with my hip but he put two injections directly into the swelling on my leg which I think were Cortisone. I was told to return in three weeks which I did but the swelling and symptoms were the same. The doctors said I would need an MRI scan as he thought it was my spine damaged so I paid for that privately on his letter of referral and took the scans back to him. He checked them and said there was nothing wrong with my hip which I already knew from the xrays and from him and it became obvious that he had wrongly requested an MRI on my hip and NOT my lower back! I complained and subsequently the clinic paid for another MRI scan on the spine on which I am waiting the results and to see a new trauma doctor.
My confidence is at a low ebb in this clinic but I feel stuck as there are no alternatives now but to see it through and get a diagnosis. I think I already know its a trapped nerve as all the symptoms concur - pain and numbness in my foot for many months now which is getting worse with pain travelling through my back and up between my shoulders. I cannot go to an osteopath in case of further damage and I have not been given any physio or exercises. I love to walk but now cannot go far as by the evening I am in too much distress.
I need some pain relief - any suggestions please (no Codeine) and I need to know what my options are if it is a disc pinching the nerve. Also, if anyone can shed light on the selling on my leg, no bruise just a large mass big enough to show through my clothes and not be able to lay on, travelling down the outer leg and round across the top of my bum.
Sorry to go on and thank you for reading and any help offered. x
