I believe I had the same surgery as you (March 2015), maybe different lumbar, mine was at L4-5. I had to wear my brace for three months, only taking off when sleeping (if reclining still have to wear, but I didn't recline, too uncomfortable), and could take off for showering.

It was a pain/hassle to have to put brace back on every time I had to get up in the night to go to the bathroom, but I'm sure doing so served its purpose.

After the three months I still had to wear brace while driving for a few more weeks.

The initial walking without the brace drove me kinda crazy; I was so used to having that back support. That freed movement of my skin was a hyper sensation. I tended to automtically want to place a hand against back to stop sensation. It took me months to adjust, but the feeling of normalcy for that did finally evolve. I haven't quite adjusted to the hardware yet, but checking to see what or if there is a problem there or below fusion.

Hope you get to work pain free!
