I will update....Feb 07 had a revision surgery, corpectomy and fused C4-C7....I'm having new pain, left shoulder, arm and now wrist into my thumb. Had an xray in April at the pcp office and was told that I am fused. I do have denervation at C5C6 but this pain is new and I am scared. What could it be? I don't see my surgeon until October. Hardware problems? Disc above or below fusion? I was told by my pcp in April that an MRI was out as it would not be a clear pic with all the hardware. What kind of test do they do if you can't do an MRI??

  • I had almost the same symptoms my ACDF was in Feb 2006. After experiencing new pain and a CT scan revealed it was a pinched nerve. After conservative treatment ESI's, meds etc I am now for weeks post foraminotomy to relieve pressure off the nerve.
There are meds that help with nerve pain if you can tolerate them and they are very good.
  • I have been taking Lyrica since Dec 07....might need to increase the dosage....I do see the neurologist next week, he is the one that did my EMG....ortho spine surgeon did my surgery. Just the thought of another surgery has me scared to death....I had 2 cervical spine surgeries within a 5 month time.

  • checking in to see if you have gone to neuro yet and what you have found out. Wishing you the best of luck sweetie....take care ....Miki
  • Seen the neuro and he twisted and pulled on my arm until I thought I was going to pass out....he was a little aggravated with me because I could not relax and was as he called it "guarding" my arm. He thinks it is probably ortho related and told me to see an ortho doctor. I went the next day to my old ortho doctor who took care of my meniscus tear in my knee....he is a really great ortho doctor and also in with my spine surgeon. He did an xray and my shoulder is perfect, no rotator cuff problem or arthritis....so this leaves only the neck. He is still going to treat it as tendinitis and put me on mobic and 4 weeks of pt....if this doesn't help it is for sure coming from my neck. I could see the look on his face and I kind of know....we will see in 4 weeks. I just don't know if I can deal with anymore neck problems, I don't think it ever ends. Thank you so much for the replies, it helps so much when someone gives me feedback.

  • forget sweetie , we are here for you , every step of the way... :)

Fused or not ACDF's can fail. Your new symptoms can imply new pathology. My first ACDF 3 level failed after 1.5 years. It took two differant surgeons before one would ponie up and show me the new problems. Get a second or third opinion. Don't always stay with the same sergeon who doesn't want to admit his efforts resulted in failure. You may need more agressive fixation ... Look at my avatar ...... By the By .... you can MRI with appliances in place. I have had several and they are still superior to Cats or X-ray's for soft tissue.

    Prayers for you and all,

  • My first acdf was failed and the surgeon went back in posterior and fixed it and put more hardware in. I have 2 plates, 12 screws and 2 rods......that revision surgery was done in Feb 07 and since then have not been pain free. I had an emg/ncv test which showed denervation at C5C6, radiuculpathy, parathesis and muscle atrophy. This left shoulder and arm is new, started back in May....it reminds me so much of how my right elbow and arm was feeling before any surgery was done. My surgeon is an ortho spine specialist and from a very good hospital/university....I was told by the neurologist that did my emg/ncv test that no other surgeon would ever touch me with the hardware in my neck. I would like to know more about the MRI....I was told that I couldn't have anymore because they would not be clear.....if there is such an MRI I am sure the hospital I go to will have it....it is huge and also a teaching hospital.....guess I will find out soon when I go back to see him. Thank you for the info.

I think that only other people that have had ACDF failure can understand what we have gone through. To have an invasive procedure like ACDF and have the hopes of a permenant "Fix", only to have our hopes dashed by increasing pain and the realization that we need MORE agressive surgery JUST BITES!! I still have pain and arm "funkiness". At least today I can say MY HIP BONE IS CONNECTED TO MY NECK BONE! And today I KNOW MY HEAD IS SCREWED ON TIGHTLY.

Minimal "scatter" with MRI's, still better for soft tissue studies, even with hardware.

Will keep you in my prayers,

  • I'm so sorry that I missed this when you 1st posted it. I'm really sorry also to hear that you are not doing so well. You were one of the 1st people that I reached out to when I joined this site because we live in the same city. Please feel free to PM me if I can be of any help at all. You might have a Nero that you truly trust. If you need a 2nd opinion I am very confident about mine and will be glad to give you his name.
    My prayers are with you.

  • The neuro I see was only for the emg/ncv test and other than that I see my pcp....I went to the ortho doctor to rule out anything being wrong with my shoulder and the xray showed my shoulder to be in great shape which for some people that is great news but for me it means the pain is coming from my neck.....yet again another wait and see...my appointment with my surgeon is not until October so I'm trying to hang on until then. Thanks again for the reply...the change over on the boards set me back but I do remember you.
