Advice for New to Chronic Sciatica Pain caused by Lumbar Degeration at L4-L5 maybe?

My name is Kimberly
I have been recently diagnosed with chronic sciatica pain It started Oct. 26th, 2015. Now i have had on and off lower back pain / sciatica pain for years. Until now its been acute. I have had physical therapy, Xray's that showed degeneration in my lower spine at L4-L5 close to the sciatica area, I have had an Epidural Steroid Injection (which did help with the area of pain but did not take all of it away). I am currently on Anti inflammatory and muscle relaxer. The last time i was at my doctors I tried to explain that the medications i'm currently on are not helping with the pain. I am not scheduled for another Epidural Steroid Injection till January 14th 2016. I'm in a small town in Alabama all the medicaid doctors here refused to even see me because i said i wanted pain management so i feel stuck with my current doctor. I'm unsure what to do any of the physical therapy i tried makes me hurt worse. I can only lay on my left side, i can barely sit. I feel alone, i am already depressed, i feel like no one wants to help me. I don'[t feel its unreasonable to want to feel comfortable. I don't even know who to complain to about this. I understand beyond what i'm taking is addictive and some people abuse it but what about someone who just wants to be comfortable :( Any advice out there?? Is there anyone i can complain to about this i do not feel i am getting the care i need.

My current diagnosed with:
degeneration in my lower spine at L4-L5
hiatial hernia
sherribic dermititis
poly cystic ovarian syndrome

I currently take:
multi vitamins

  • Hello. I am also new and sharing a slightly different but the same problem (if that even makes sense!) I have 2 disc ruptures, 1 of them is L4L5 and L5S1 I feel exactly as you do. My doctor is happy to throw pills at me but nothing works. I'm not feeling better and I cant handle the pain. I am actually replying to your post at 3am because I have begun to accept that sleep does not exist in my world. I'm no expert nor do I want to be but if you need someone to talk to I offer my hand. Even with the mighty NHS I cannot get any help

  • Hi, Sorry to hear of your problems. Personally, I've only ever has any relief from medications such as gabapentin and pregablin/lycra so it may be worth seeing if you can try different meds. I don't know both your situations and noone here is qualified to give specific medical advice but it would help to see a specialist who can advise on your options if medication is not helpful to your situation and you are in so much pain you can't work. It may be wise to get opinion on exactly what is causing your pain before seeing a pain management specialist. I never had any help from the service and ended up trying to muddle along on my own with little input from my doctor with regards to medication. Throughout the many years I've had pain, I've tried to avoid pinning too much hope on one particular doctor as it can really set you back if you don't get the help you want. It might be better trying to get various opinions. Why won't some doctors see you or is it that you don't want to see them?

Nicopigan, I also had problems accessing treatment via NHS and decided to pay for consultation privately as I was unable to work and losing money so made sense to pay out & get back to work rather than stay in bed for months which was only going to make things worse. This is the country we now live in...
