Stretching causing pain, tightness and stiffness after 3 month check

I am 13 weeks post Alif of l5S1. Was feeling pretty good. Went to doctor and PT and got some new stretches. One of the stretches is sitting in a chair and bending forward as far as you can and holding it for 10 seconds. Also laying on back and pulling knee to chest and holding. I started doing this a week and now I can barely bend forward without having extreme pain stiffness and tightness. Has anyone had this before? Did I mess up fusion? Thanks!

  • Hi I understand what your going through and for me it was all part of the healing process which can take a while. There's fluid scar tissue and muscle healing that I was told in recovery there will be pain. Did you contact your surgeon if anything for peace of mind asking "is this normal"?
I had my fair share of pain after PT for sure. I am fused T4 -S2. I have cages rods screws some being 4 inches. So you bet if something is new and I didn't feel comfortable I called. I was expected to.
Hope you start feeling better soon!

  • Thanks for responding to me. How are you doing today and how long since your surgery?
  • Hi, it will be 3 years next month. A very long 3 years. I am back in PT and HAVE to have regular massages for persistent spasms. This for me now is my norm. My back is so reconstructed that many of my muscles don't work normal anymore. Should I say they don't fire like they should, they either are non stop or just stop. I am greatful to be walking so if this maintenance is what I needo then it is what it is. It took me two years to actually know what was permanently numb, weak, and so forth. I can't say it is not frustrating cause I would be lying.
