Post op L5-S1 fusion /Laminectomy nerve pain

I am 7 days post-op from an L5-S1 fusion and from the time I was in recovery I mentioned that my left foot was numb. I stayed in hospital 3 nights and was released on the 4th day even though the nerve pain was going from numb to the feeling of my "foot is on fire". The next day at home the Pain was unbearable and after a trip to the ER I was readmitted to hospital and am currently still in hospital. Surgeon keeps stating that the sciatic nerve is just irritated from surgery and will just have to heal itself hopefully. Taking dilaudid injections and Percocet as well as Neurotin and now a medrol dose pack and Tizanidine and pain is still unbearable. I do not know how long I will be in hospital. This recovery as well as the normal recovery of the fusion is not what I was expecting when I decided to have this surgery. I am just looking to communicate with anyone else who has had this complication from this surgery and look for suggestions on how to deal with this. This is my 3rd back surgery so I have recovered from back surgery but have never dealt with this before. Thanks for any suggestions.

I also had horrible numbness and pain across the bottom of my right foot after my second fusion surgery. I couldn't bear it... couldn't sleep... nothing. The only thing that seemed to help somewhat was Qxycodone... but even that didn't totally eliminate it. After the fist couple of weeks the numbness subsided a bit to where it was manageable... but even to this day one year later I still have some numbness across the bottom of my right foot... which is most likely permannent nerve damage.

  • I was told.today i need L5-S1 fusion. I have bad herniation.for last.6 month and bulge pain since i was.25.. i am now 43. The pain is unbearable. My.question is is the surgery worth it. He said there could still be pain. Plus removal of dics my bone and plastic in there and.pins.etc. they make it aound like no big deal. I dont handle pain well since i habe suffered for so long. Plus the pain management plans.were.completely avoided. Side note i hqbe depreasion and severe.anxiety this prob making this harder to deal with. With the added bonus i started.smoking 5 years ago. Said .i habe to stop or the fusion could not take. Sorry for rambling on. Thank you for any advice.
