Disc/nerve pain vs muscle pain

Is there any way to tell the difference without getting an mri?

I need to wait 3 months for one and I'd like to treat my symptoms while I wait. My upper back has been bad recently. I've been trying to sit with proper posture, but I feel pain. It's in between the shoulder blade and spine. It comes and goes but mostly hurts when I move in certain positions. It's a sharp pain and runs from the bottom of my neck/upper traps all the way down to the bottom of my shoulder blade

Are you seeing a pain management doctor?
I had an EMG that was very helpful with me.

You may benefit if you use the search on this site, upper right on page, looking into EMG and see if that might benefit you.
Besides being informative, it may lead you to more questions to jot down for doctor visit.
