Cervical fusion after thyroid cancer

Has anyone had neck fusion after thyroiectomyectomy for thyroid cancer? I had to have my thyroid removed back in May 2015 due to thyroid cancer and now I'm supposed to have spinal cervical fusion on Wednesday 1/27/16 I think I'm way too scared to do it. I already have complications with swallowing and voice problems from my thyroid removal. My neurosurgeon doesn't listen to me about my concerns regarding having surgeries so soon together. I am meeting with another one on Tuesday. I am so scared to do it! I do have weakness in my right arm which is my dominant arm and that's why it is recommended that I have spinal fusion in my neck. I was already scheduled to have spinal fusion in my lower back that's why everything is moving so fast. They just switch that back fusion to a neck fusion. I just wanted to know if there is at least some other people who have been through a similar situation.

  • Hey there yes I can totally relate. I had a lump that was removed near my thyroid which showed stage 3 papillary Tall cell cancer in may 2009. The surgeon said 2 weeks and we removed the entire thyroid. I then also found out I had Hashimotos thyritis. So then that we done. I suffered following the surgery from a severe swallowing issue where even drinking water i would choke like I was going to die. The doctor was stumped. He never heard of this before. So my husand made me smoothies and sat through each one with me still choking but not as bad with the thicker liquid. I was so scared that it would be forever. This went on for 3 weeks thank goodness no longer. Also came the Vertigo. Holy cow, never had that in my life and yet again the doctor was stumped. I couldnt even move my eyes without going into a spin. My husband had to take off close to 6 weeks to care for me. He had to walk me sit me feed me, yeah it was unreal. I never felt so helpless. The Vertigo to this day comes and goes. August I went into the hospital for 3 days of RAI treatment. That was a very long boring 3 days!!!

The following January I was in a car accident being t boned. My neck was hurting so so bad and I found I had compression due to herniated disks in the neck and needed surgery. March 2010 I had the disks done C4 and C5. They went into the front of my neck higher up than the thyroid surgery. I had no crossover issues at all. I was feeling good and pain free. It was easier for me than the thyroidectomy!
The next February I was rear ended sitting waiting to take a left turn. Surgery was again needed. I instead went to PT and dealt with the pain amongst other terrible symptoms of weakness numbness grip issues and so forth. That surgery was finally taken care with the total spine reconstruction.
I was nervous going into the cancer surgery but stayed strong due to being angry that I had cancer. I just wanted it out of me. The Cervical surgery for me was nothing because I am a cancer survivor.
You are too and can do what you need too. Stay strong and forge forward thyca survivor!
Our dates, months anyways, seem to be the same for the thyroid surgery and close for the time span for neck surgery. I will say that having 2 surgeries as I did for the thyroid within 2 weeks messed with me something aweful. It could of been the anesthesia I believe but no one can say for certain. However you have to be comfortable within your shoes going into another surgery. Getting that second opinion is a good thing. I wish you the best of luck!! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or just reach out here. I am curious as to the outcome of your appointment.
