How do I get Lumbar MRI measurements???

I just had a new Lumbar MRI - with and without contrast.

....a new 5 mm left foraminal disc protusion mildly impinging the left L3 dorsal root ganglion.

Should I ask for a measurement of the "mildly impinging"?

...severe disc dehydration with heterogeneous discal signal changes seen posteriorly...Disc bulging has slightly diminished since the last examination...

There are no measurements mentioned at L4-5. How do I get actual figures? I asked at the MRI site for this but I did not get it.

Any ideas on how I should proceed? jade :?

  • I see the dr this week and wonder if I need additional measurements.
Has anyone ever had a problem with MRI results that just describe a disc problem? I am a little nervous as I know me dr will want me to do the lumbar steroid epidurals. jade
  • My short answer is yes.

My long answer is - I'm asking the same questions. I can see from My MRI results (written analysis, which I received from the radiology dept. at my request) that there is a bulge at L4/L5. My problem is at L5/S1. If I fuse L5/S1, how long before L4/5 become a problem, i.e. how far out is that bulge? MRI also mentions "bilateral facet disease" which sounds horrible yet I can find nothing on the web. Anyhow, had the MRI 6 months ago and already reviewed with him but want to understand the details if I need to go under the knife, so I think you're right to ask these questions. Good luck to you.
  • melissa--thanks for the feedback. I would like to understand and know the actual results as far as numbers. I have had many MRIs and do not truly understand the comment of the disc seems slightly diminished but there are no numbers. I don't know if this is subjective as there are no numbers. jade
