I had my C5 - S1 disc removed 2 weeks ago and a fusion. I walk abit each day but have no idea how much I should be doing and when I am ready to step it up abit.
Could someone please let me know a basic programme that will help my recovery without over doing it.
Thank in advance

I have had back pain for the last 10 years have tried physio, hydrotherapy, multiple drugs, lots of other things in the hope to cure my back. Ended up having facet joints injected and taking more and more drugs before I was told I had to have a Spinal Fusion. I had this procedure on the 19th August 2008. All this and I have 4 kids, 2 businesses and I study. I also rescue dogs in my spare time!!!!! Me in a nutshell.

hiya,
The best thing to do is just ask your doctor the do"s and dont"s. In the mean time just pace your self , you might find that you will find your own limits.Good luck with your recovery.

Call the sugeons office and ask to speak with the his/her surgical assistant or nurse practitioner.. They can tell you everything you need to know or will find out the information for you........
Good luck......Paul
Cervical myelopathy, 15 surgeries to date, Severe OA, bilateral knee replacements, DDD, 13 MRI’s, 4 sets of spinal cortisone procedures and dozens of cortisone shots in other areas for OA. Upcoming scheduled surgeries include laminectomy and removal of synovial cyst located at left facet joint of L4-L5 (may require fusion); Right resection of A-C joint (left was done 12 years ago, by far the most painful of all my surgeries)
should be able to fax or e-mail you some do's and dont's if they have a list.
this tomorrow. Thanks guys

be your guide. If you are in pain have a rest, If you can do a bit more then do so but increase in small incriments.
I know when I started walking I sometimes would get a bit far from home and need to stop.
Since then I now go to a park where I can do laps which is easier as the track has a flat and even surface and we have several parks like this near me.
I am up in Sydney!
But of course it is best to chack with the Dr.
Gosh how are you coping with a fusion and 4 kids etc!

Work related injury 2001, Bulging discs L2-S1 had Laminectomy/discectomy L4-5 2001. Semi-success.
Since developed DDD, Stenosis, scoliosis,& very numb feet and legs & more.
Continued with PT, Hydrotherapy, Deep tissue massage, facet block injections (no change) light gym work.
PLIF L3-S1 using BMP, with decompression, hardware, & correction to scoliosis May 7th 2008. 10 days hospital 2 weeks in rehabilitation hospital.
Started PT day 1, aquatherapy (heaven)day 14.
Finished PT and aquatherapy and waitng to start at gym.
Doing really well with only the occassional hiccup. Still on Oxycontin 5mg x 2, Endone 5mg X 2, Valium 5mg x 2,am reducing these as I improve.
Our minds are more powerful then our bodies so watch your thoughts and be careful what you wish for.
The kids are being great but they have missed out because of my back issues. My Dr actually said use common sense and I didn't find it very useful.
I think you are right I should just listen to my nody.
Thanks for the advice
