Told to apply for Government old Age Pension and my hospital Pension

Hi I was told I have to apply for old age pension(CPP) and work hospital pension by LTD. I have asked for a copy of my insurance policy from LTD and another set of applications as my paperwork was wet in the mail. I'm concerned collecting my work pension so early at 49 as opposed to when I'm 60 as then I have more like $2000. to live on as opposed to only $860. if I collect my work pension now early. I'm still trying to get hold of my union Rep. but think she's retired now. Any advice? Thanks if you can help. Charry

Pensions

Your Union Rep will be the best resource as to the pensions. Many pensions to require that if declared permanently disabled the person must begin taking their pension. Others allow the person the option to take it early upon disability or to defer it until a later date. IF you are given the option to defer it check to see if you then must take it age 60 or if you can opt in earlier if needed. For example, at age 50 you find you need the pension, but by opting out in May of 2010 you are then automatically only eligible upon pension age of 60.

I've not heard of a work hospital pension (not even sure of what that is). But you should get a copy of the EXACT LTD policy under which you are covered and keep it for your records. The LTD policy should lay out what it requires (for example, mine lays out that I must apply for SSDI after out of work for one year, so if they come to me and demand I must apply it does synch with my policy so I can't fight it). Make sure to get a copy now so you can see what is required of your. It's best to get it now as the policy can change later and then you could be going on information that does not apply to you.

Thanks For the Info

Yes I asked for my LTD policy. I will find out more info when I get it to see what I can do. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to work one day though. Even so to get Government pension I still think I'm covered under LTD until I retire with the help of Government pension. As for my work pension I think I won't have to collect until I'm 60 hopefully but will know more later. Thanks again. Charry
