Peripheral Nerve Stimulator

I was diagnosed with coccydynia several years ago and underwent a coccygectomy in December, 2007. Surgery didn't help and I've had various treatments, including injections, physical therapy, etc, with no relief. My pain management dr has recommended a peripheral nerve stimulator. Does anyone have any information on this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lynn

Hello Lynn ~

Welcome to the board. I am not personally familiar with the peripheral nerve stimulator, but it works on the same principal as the spinal cord stimulator, but in a more localized way. It is designed to block the pain signals from a specific part of your body.

Here's a link that explains it quite well:

http://www.arizonapain.com/PeripheralStim-W.html

Since I've been on this board, I do not recall anyone else posting about a peripheral nerve stimulator. I hope someone will post with their experiences.

peripheral Nerve Field Stimulator

This type of stimulator is similar to the sns except instead of placing the leads into the spinal canal, they are placed directly over the area of pain. You still go through the save surgical procedure. The reason this type of stimulator has been recommended to me is because my pain is localized in the lowest part of my spine (sacrum/coccyx). I've been approved for this procedure and am waiting for my pain management dr to schedule me for the trial. I would just like to hear from someone else who has had this particular stimulator. I'm sure there are a lot of people who have pain in one particular area like me. My dr said there is no reason to place the leads into the spinal canal when they can be placed directly over the area of pain.

Hi ~

I still have never heard of this being done, but hopefully someone who has will respond to you. Often someone will have pain in one area but it is generated higher up in the spinal column.

I have pain in my right thigh, but the nerve problem is at the level of the L2 or 3 vertebra. Installing something in my thigh would only slightly help the problem. I think this is the theory behind the SCS and why it is implanted in the spinal canal.

Obviously, your doctor knows what will work best for you. I hope that it is helpful and that you can find someone who has had the same procedure.

My mother had this done

My mother had this done about 1.5 years ago. She had NO relief from it and could not get any CT or MRI's afterwards due to internal device. She just had a lam w/ fusions and the doc too the device out. She is healed due to recent surgery but the simulator was a waste of her time, pain and money. It did nothing for the pain.

hope this helps.

Where is your pain?

I have peripheral nerve problems in my lower legs and was just curious where your pain is.

Peripheral Nerve Field Stimulator

My pain is in the very bottom of my spine...coccyx/sacrum area. Sitting is very, very painful for me. I had the trial for the PNFS and it was a failure...I rec'd absolutely no relief from it. The leads were removed after 48 hours and various reprogramming.
