Exercise after Surgery

New to this forum but not to back issues.

Recently (5 weeks ago) had anterior spinal fusion: 2 level L5-S1 and L4-L5. Everything went GREAT! Home 2 days later, up and around easily every day. Wearing a Boston Brace w leg hasp. Walking around 2 miles each day. Doing stretches and exercises that PT gave me the day after surgery. I want to do more.

Pre-surgery was working out (weight machines and swimming) as well as walking 5 days per week. When can I return to the pool? (even if just walking or stretching)

Incision is healing great. No soreness, tenderness or broken skin. Are indoor public pools ok?

Surgeon is out of town for 2+ more weeks and his staff won't give me an answer.

Just looking for others opinions at this point if you were in the same shape/condition at some point...

Exercise afer surgery

Hi and Welcome to Spine Health,

I have had 3 spinal fusions and am a Masters swimmer. I was always allowed to return to the pool after the incisions healed, about 3 weeks after surgery. I never had any problems with pools. Just don't do any flip turns for awhile and no butterfly or breaststroke either. Luckily my spine surgeon is a competitive swimmer too so that always helps.

As always you should consult with your own doctor. That is a bummer he is out of town. Do you have a family doctor you could talk to??

Good luck and hope you get back in the pool soon!!

Take your time, do not rush, use that energy to manage what you can do more effectively, we are not after a Pb here ! If you are not new to back issues you can wait two weeks, my fusion took 15 months and never fully healed.

My boy was twice National Swimming Champion S6/7 and 6th fastest in the WORLD, so for now take it easy.

Many people here cannot stand up, I admire your effort and good fortune, I say this because I care !

4 months after

Hi! I also had an occiput to c3 fusion following a decompression surgery to remove a bony mass that was putting pressure on my brainstem and spine 4 months ago. So far, I've only been able to walk as exercice. Just a higher step or jumping or the impact when I jog lightly is still to painful and uncomfortable to do. I wonder when are things gonna get better. I am now doing exercice to get my neck stronger and been doing physio for 5 weeks. My surgeon told me it could take 8 to 12 months to get back at a 100%. I'm now hoping to play a little tennis by the end of the summer. I hope things will go well for you as well.

There is no one that can tell you that, except your surgeon. You really need to wait for him.
