SSDI Approved before ALJ by new VSU Unit

Hi everyone, I can hardly beleive that I got approved so quickly here in FL. But the turnaround time was apporximately 13 months, as I applied in Nov 09 after the 5 month waiting period. So to expalin, there is a new Unit that SSDI put in place called the Virtual Screening Unit, which looks at cases that are waiting for ALJ hearing and may be fully favorable. I received a letter last month asking me to fax any updated info to them. I faxed my EMG results from May 2010 and that appears to have been the deciding factor. Hopefully this new process will help alot of the spineys who have been waiting for ALJ Hearings. Does anyone know how you apply for your children's benefits? Do you have to go to the office? Thanks, good luck everyone!!

SSDI

Call local SS office and request dependent child SSDI. They'll need names, ages, and SS#'s.

Dep child is: Unmarried, younger than age 18; can be 18-19 years old and a full-time student (no higher than grade 12).

Example:
*SS awards you $1600/mo eff 12/1/08
*Dep award is 50% = $800/mo TOTAL
*3 kids under 18 (ages 17, 15, and 12)
*I child now 19
*Now the 3 split the $800 for $266.66/mo each
*1st child graduates, remaining 2 get $400/mo
*2nd child graduates, remaining 1 gets $800/mo
*19 yr old WAS 17 12/1/08. S/He's eligible for benefits from 12/1/08 thru age 18/HS grad

Congratulations.
Hopefully that new unit speeds things up for more people who also deserve it.
