Sleeping all the time, is this normal?

My surgery was 3/24, a laminectomy and spinal fusion at L3/4. Pain usually does not bother me now unless I have been on my feet all day, then I get a dull ache.

My real problem is that I am sleeping almost 3/4 of the day, when I can. Is this normal? Is this just healing, or is this something else? I am tired a lot and my right leg is weak (it was before surgery, also).

Any input appreciated.

First off, Welcome to Spine Health!! My spine surgeries to date have been cervical, but spine surgery puts us under anesthesia, and too our bodies through a lot of trauma.

With that stated, you are still pretty new out of surgery, and your body is doing a lot of healing and adjusting. I know for me, I was draggy and tired for up to 3 months post op!! So if your question was coming from me, I would say for many, yes normal. I also found that I took naps on occasion, and I was never a nap person.

It should start to get better in a month or so. Listen to your doctor, and too to your body. Please keep us posted. Again, Welcome aboard!! Smile

Thanks

Thank you for such a swift and reassuring answer! I did not mention that it was a 5 hour operation, and they put in rods and screws. I feel like the 6 Million Dollar Man or a Borg. Smile

The Borg, gotta love that picture!! "We are borg - you will be assimilated." (G) I'm not so sure if it is "how long" we are under, but all the drugs the Anesthesiologist puts in us, plus the trauma of the surgery, and our bodies healing methods - but 'draggy' 101 is not uncommon. I am facing several more spine surgeries this year, and I am mentally "telling" myself to be ready for the tired, draggy, and at times (yes) depressed modes as I heal. I hope you find that it starts to back off within a month or so. Smile

Checking in with you...

I wanted to reach out to you today and see if you are still having the same sleep problems. Sometimes it can take quite a bit of time to recover and get back to "normal" after the trauma of surgery, implanted materials, and pain.

Let us know how you are doing.

Best Hopes,
sean

Thanks!

Thanks for asking! Smile Yes, I'm feeling much better now. Unfortunately, I slept through my best friend's wedding! But he understands and now I'm up and about.

Here's the kicker: I get to have a hip replaced on Aug. 4! Yippee! Wink

Hi and Welcome.

I have had 3 fusions in 4 years and the last one was this past march. I am fused L1-S1. I am still sleeping a lot. And thats not like me. I was always the first one up,never had a problem with 5:15 a.m. swim practice or an early run. No I can hardly get out of bed on my day off. I am sleeping 10 and 12 hours on days off. And naps sometimes too. This from a person who did not nap as a baby and drove her mother crazy!!

I just assume I need it because of never really recovering from one surgery before the next. The body uses energy to recover and we need to give the body time to recover. I check with my surgeon and internist from time to time to make sure I am still in the realms of norm.

I swim on a masters swim team and I know that makes me a little more tired than before surgery but it is so good for my back to be weightless and I won't give it up.

Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. And let us know how it goes.

Take while you can get

Take while you can get it.
I'd pay big money to get a full nights sleep.
I honestly can't remember last time I slept more then a few hours at a time.
Enjoy !

Just finished

Just finished physical therapy for the new hip, so now I'm even more Borg-like! LOL Back is doing much better now, though it pains me if I've been on my feet too long or in bad weather.

Anyone else notice weird bone aches in bad weather? Or is it just my imagination?

Yes I seem to have more issues with my back when the barometer drops.
