Hi I could really use some help. I had ACDF C5/6 about 5 yrs ago. Thought all went well until about 3 yrs ago. I started getting pain in shoulder blade and muscle in arm, it would come and go. My doctor sent me for MRI in Feb 2008 Results are: C3/4 disc herniation causing moderate impression upon thecal sac
C4/5 disc bulge causing small ventral impression upon thecal sac
C6/7 disc bulge which impinges upon thecal sac
Degenerative disease Now neck hurts to move, and can sometimes feel it in my middle finger. Shoulder blade feels like a giant muscle cramp.
My docor took more exrays said he also thinks my screws came loose and plate is moving around, said I never fused. He is sending me for a CT myelogram. Says he needs to do sugery to fix it and will go thru the back of my neck. Wants to take bone from my hip this time. Has anyone ever had this happen to them, and is this the normal procedure. Any help appreciated
Sorry to hear you did not fuse, I also had front C4-6 done Dec. last year and found out last month that my plate is loose and did not fuse. That explains the pain I have been in the past 8 months. I saw a new spine surgeon (out of town), I will have surgery Dec. 2nd by two spine surgeons going in the back of my neck putting a plate from C4-T2, bone grafts from my hip and rods on both sides of the plate. My neck is very unstable and this will solve that problem. The scarer part is they said I have a 50% change the pain will not improve. I choose to look at this as the glass being half full and pray it goes to the 50$ good side which will improve my pain from a D- to a C+ or B-, I know I can't live the way I am and I am willing to get a stable neck and except what I have too to move forward. I have a good feeling that these doctors can help me.
Good luck with your current problems, this sites sure does help me.

Sorry to hear you didn't fuse! I dont understand why they didn't see your non fusion in your followup visits after surgery? I thought they X Ray you at each followup post opp?. I know They X Ray ed me at my first followup last week I was just under 4 weeks post opp but I could clearly see fusing starting at both levels they worked on.
My wife is always trying to get rid of me. today she told me to put the garbage out. I said to her I already did. She told me to go and keep an eye on it!
I only saw the doctor once after the surgery, thought everything was fine. I went a few years with no problems at all, then gradually the pain started coming back. The first time though before the surgery my arm tingled, I got horrible headaches, This time is different more like muscle spasm that won't go away and hurt. I feel it it my arm and shoulder blade and middle finger, and my neck is very hard to move w/out pain. My regular doc took exrays, and he didn't pick up on it, only the spine specialist did. Well hopefully the myelogram will show whats going on.
