hand pain and numbness after botched IV attempt
went to hospital outpatient for test which called for IV - nurse attempted IV in left hand and was unsuccessful. did opposite elbow instead ok. left hand filled with blood, swelled to about golf ball size and was very painful. nurse used hot compresses to get swelling down before I left...
next day although still painful and stiff, now I have numbness in that area of hand. Still one week later, have periods of partial numbness and periods of TOTAL NUMBNESS in that area of hand.
neurologist says they possibly injured a nerve with botched IV and could take several weeks/months to heal. Does this sound accurate? How will I know if this is permanent damage or will I have to wait and see?
many botched IV attempts that I can't count them! My veins do roll but I have heard that phlembotomy is not a required course for nurses anymore! When I require an IV, I ALWAYS ask for an anesthetic nurse. They know how to hit the veins. Yes, I think that you are going to have to wait this out. That nerve will probably heal but will take time.
