my story with back surgery

Hello.

I am a 26 year old female that went through two back surgeries already. I had a herniated disc (L5, S1). My initial injury came from a car accident about 7 years ago. I delt with the pain of pinched nerves for all that time. I keep very active with sports and excersizing which helped me deal with the pain. Then one day I was playing volleyball, dove for the ball wrong and totally hurt my back. I went and got an MRI done and my doctor said that my disc was so far slipped that surgery was the only thing to fix it. I lost a lot of feeling in my right leg, sometimes it felt numb and tingly. I also had extreme pain in my lower back and in my right buttocks.
So finally I get the surgery done and from what my doctor said that everything went well. It was a hard recovery for the first week. Trying to get up from laying down hurt a lot also trying to change positions was really painful. After about a week it was going well. Until about 2 weeks post surgery I started getting severe migraines. My doctor was thinking I had a spinal fluid leak from surgery. So he sent me to get a blood patch done, which made my migraines 10 times worse. So I had to go in for a second surgery so my doctor could seal the whole in my spine so the fluid from around my brain would stop leaking out. So my doctor went back in and put a "cement" mixture over my spine to seal the whole.
The second sugery was a lot harder to recover from. But so far I am doing well. Its been 2.5 months from my first surgery and 1.5 months from my second surgery. I do my own physical therapy and started back at the gym. Some days are a lot better then others, but hopefully I will get back to my old self again. Its been a little hard changing your entire life and the way you sit, stand and basically do anything.

So often, its not the actual surgery or even the recovery period that is difficult and takes the most adjustments. It is what you have to deal with long term. Spinal surgery will put some limitations on our pre-surgical activity, some folks we have more restrictions than others.
One of the most important things to do while recovering and even later on is to adhere to all the limitations and restrictions and to keep up with all of the exercises you were given. Too little work, and you will continue to have problems, too much work and you would only be asking for trouble.
One of the biggest reasons for people having follow on problems and additional surgeries is that they over did something.
Adjustments need to be made, but we all have to make some type of adjustment as we getting older
