Denied Medicine
OK, so I go to the nation-wide pharmacy chain I use for my prescriptions. I turned over a script for Dilaudid pills and phenergan(many times have had this anti-nausea drug filled.) The pharmacy told me that the computer approved the DILAUDID but work comp was denying the promethazine(cheap anti-nausea.) They should be approving all my meds, but found it quite amusing that they would approve dilaudid over phenergan????
Situation was fixed with a few legal phone calls.

Not sure why Phenergan is a problem. My experience with it is for my daughter as it is over the counter in UK/Australia and many other countries. Was the only antihistamine that actually worked for my daughter when she was younger and reacted very bad to Mosquito bites (wrist would double in size when she was 4/5 from single bite). In the Netherlands they kept trying to give me other equivalent drugs (but did not work) and would not provide Phenergan. Got friend from UK to Courier them to me and still keep stock of tablet form due to shelf life. Phenergan can have a sedative effect (and did for my daughter) but heard horror stories of the reverse effect on other children. Could be the variability of the effects make some people/organisation cautious. Glad situation fixed but dissapointed Pharmacy and doctor cannot communicate and the need to resort to legal calls!

Thats a blast from the past, i used that for my daughters travel sickness, it worked in a sense, where she would sleep for most of the journey then wake-up when we were about 5 minutues before our destination arrival, then she would vomit!

My name is angie, i live in birmingham england.my back problems started in 1998.2001 had cartlidge removed in my right knee. when i was recovering from that i had a car accident, this caused my discs to prolapse.x-rays , MRI scan. 2002 epidural. 2003 had discs removed and 1 shaved.This has left me in pain and i have a protruding buldge to the right of my scar. 2004 PT. 2005 facet joint injections. 2006 more PT, MRI scan. 2007 referred to Pain Management.Now i have to take lots of medication. 2008 im waiting To have epidural and facet joint injections. I also suffer fibromyalgia this diagnosis was confirmed in october 2008.November 28th facet Joint Injections. After being examined by the GP he has concerns, so waiting for referral to orthopedic surgeon and for MRI scan, should recieve these in 2009 as he wants me seen ASAP. Appointment for orthopedic surgeon is dated the 27th january 2009. Not very well with my back at the moment, and been ill all over christmas, its so painful to walk now . Well i went to see the spinal surgeon, he said my spine is crumbling and he also said i have arthritus in my spine but the middle of my back, he said theres nothing he can do, until it gets worse. I have to continue with pain management, and the tablets, and he said i need to strenghten my muscles around the spine,and then he discharged me. But i am scared of doing more damage, i have lost faith in doctors, i feel so poorly at the moment, i havnt got any more energy. I cant stop crying, since i got back. The doctor knew about my spine crumbling in 2006, and still sent me to physio areobics.
Phenergan in combo w/your dilaudid, or rather, taken an hour or so before the dilaudid, can(will) cause it to have a much more intense pain relieving/sedative/depressant effect. This can be intentionally by your doc, unintentional, and can be good or bad. I hope your doc is on top of it/aware.... Just know if it knocks you over, well, you know why. I only say this as you said you filled the phenergan many times before, but didn't say so about the Dilaudid or the combo.

L5-S1 7mm anterior 5mm central. Central stenosis and foraminal stenosis. Severe sciatica w/terrible mobility. ESIx2,etc.
Meds: ALL generic, feel free to ask.
Plan: upcoming surgery(2010).
Thanks for looking out for me, JWM. Yep, that's one of the effects of phenergan I like. Besides the anti-emetic effect, I like to use the phenergan to potentiate the narc effect without having to take more narcs. Makes me able to stretch the narcs out longer and help me sleep. I also am a puker-pain and meds can make me yak everywhere!
This is a very good warning to other folks, though, if they have not taken the combo before. Also, the mention of children. I have seen severe dystonic reactions of phenergan IV in kids. I really hate giving small kiddos and elderly IV phenergan cuz it can knock them out and they are more prone to dystonic reactions. I will never forget one child repeatedly hitting himself in the head uncontrollably . This type of reactions usually are settled down with Benadryl and Ativan.
