Hi everyone!
Hope you are all having a great weekend.
I dont remember if I posted to say that my PM prescribed me Klonopin .5 x2 at night. So basically 1mg at night. She said it will help with my anxiety for the following day? Is that how it works for everyone else?
I used to be in bed by 8p because every night I just wanted the day to end. Yes, I was hitting an all time low and my PM obviously recognized it and thought the klonopin would help. But I take it at 8p and it doesnt get me high or anything, but it keeps me up and I end up doing a bunch of things. I do not get any energy feeling from it. I've been on meds that give me that boost so I know what it feels like.
So when its time to go to sleep, I'm not as tired as I thought I should be. Some nights I am up until 12 even. I think maybe because I am not so anxious and not so eager to end my day? Who knows.
So now to the following day - the day its suppose to be helping me...I dont necessarily feel great, but just a tad less anxious.
I guess I am just confused on the med. She still wants me to take the Xanax for my panic attacks as well.
So I saw her in the clinic one day and asked her if I could take the Klonopin in the morning instead and, very firmly, she said absolutely not.
Then I had a discussion with my therapist and he told me that I am the FIRST person that she has ever written that script for, and she's been at it for 14 years.
He told me that she saw my emotional state and thought it would be the best thing for me at the moment - however to not expect that they are going to prescribe it to me every month. That I would need to go to a psychiatrist for that sort of thing.
I'm just confused on the whole thing of it. I thought klonopin was alike with Xanax...and they make it seem like it was something they never even prescribe.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I go back on the 17th because the head of the clinic physician wants to take over my case. So I'm going in to see what his thoughts of the future are for me...and again my therapist told me I should consider myself very lucky as he has never done that either.
I guess they either really want to help me or they see some problem...I have no idea.
I just wish they would end this pain for me.
Sorry - went off on a ramble.

For panic attacks. I believe (though I am not a doctor) that it is in the same family as xanax. I wasn't told to take it at bedtime, but I am sure it is prescribed differently for everyone. I was prescribed it for a fast acting panic attack relief .5mg up to 2x a day as needed. I think I have heard at least one other person here prescribed this to take at night, for relief the next day.
I get a little sleepy when I take it, not like I HAVE to go to sleep, but like oh, if I close my eyes I could go to sleep... you know?
Everyone reacts to medication differently. Maybe after your system becomes accustom to it, you will go to sleep easier. Or maybe you are right, less stress and worries, you don't feel you need to go to sleep to get away from everything.
Sounds like your doctors are taking good care of you. It seems that is rare to find lately. Let us know how things go with the head physician.

It sounds like it's working for you.
I took it for about 2 years and quit a few months ago..well I switched to ativan for panic/anxiety.
How the klonopin worked for me was if I was very anxious or panicky it helped that and that was all,but if I was only slightly stressed it made me tired.I took it a couple times when I really didn't need it(but wasn't sure-lol) and I HAD to sleep(seriously).Klonopin is good for serious panic or anxiety IMO but for mild to moderate I think the ativan works better for me.It doesn't seem as strong.I was taking .5mg
Here's what some people are saying/commenting about klonopin:

I also take klonopin lower dose during day and higher dose at night.

I take one mg right when I wake up and one mg around 7 I go to sleep at around 11:30. If you need it for daytime anxiety id say break one in half in the morning one at noon and one later toward dinner and the other 30 mins before bed. It takes 1-2 hours to kick in but the half life from 1 mg i dont believe would be able to adequately treat much anxiety .

I was put on the klonopin for muscle pain and he thinks it will help me get my cognitive issues under control, He also said that because of the muscle pain in upper back and neck area I'm getting the migraines. and the Klonopin has..... I can almost say totally knocked my migraines out. He says I'm getting muscular headaches.
once in awhile I will get vascular headache, but these don't start in back of my head and usually a cup of coffee can help that.
He stated that the klonopin for me will help many of my problems, because of how meds effect me they call it.. sumthing like the paradox effect.
When I take 1mg of klonopin with my ultram and nuerontin in morning I can concentrate much better (I do have some kind of autoimmune disease)(we just don't know what kind)
for instance I had a very difficult time getting things together and paying bills, trying to do 2 things at one time or have someone in the house ask me ? when I am on the phone would send my head spinning many things like that and I would find if this happened alot in one day I would be in so much pain anyway the mixture of the ultram klonopin and neurontin has made that so much better. one more thing with my hyper reflexes my grandkids or anyone even get close to my legs or if i felt like something might hit them It would make me a nervous wreck like I was very protective with my legs I know it might sound strange but its the truth. well with the new meds and the mixture I feel like I have a new life. now all I have to do is get this surgery done and I will be taking a new road with less bumps and pot holes.
I was wondering does the neurontin constipate you at all? I see you take 1800 mgs. I just started this neurontin 1 month ago and I spose to increase dose little at time he says I can take up to 1000mgs 3 times a day. holly molly I know I will not need that much, and he doesn't think I will neither but he said we will just keep trying to find something that works. Right at this moment I do 400 in AM and 400 in afternoon and 600 in eve.(and I think I will stick with that amt for now) I have notice if I'm up keeping mind busy and moving and thinking it will not make me tired and holly holly it takes my ARM and LEG pain away.AT night when I take 600 mg and sit down relax read watch tv crochet I get tired and pain relief in arm and leg goes away. The neurontin does not help with my back and neck pain but, the klonopin does. maybe thats the difference between nerve and muscle pain... sending all beautiful thoughts and a big happy smile....Patsy

Hi Alina,
My experience with Klonopin is totally different because of much higher dosage and I use it for seizures. Xanax although it is in the same family (benzo's) is usually prescribed more often for anxiety because it has a different chemical makeup.
I have found that sometimes my doctor will prescribe a drug for short term use to help train my body for a certain reaction. Maybe this is why your doctor asked you to take Klonopin only at night. I think if you need to use a long term anxiety medication you will probably be switched to something else.
Both drugs are habit forming and usually prescribed for short time use.
I'm glad you have a doctor working with you on your medications.
Drug treatment is and needs to be specialized to an individual. IMHO
Take care of you.
O-
Strange thing is that I took this for a long time and had no problems quitting it,though I have heard/read that others have become addicted or had problems getting off if it.At one point I took it daily, but then took it only as needed, and I was prescribed the klonopin for panic attacks and anxiety. It is a drug that is prescribed 'off lable' however and many people have had relief with it.
As I said previously,it did actually help me,but I should have stated more clearly that my anxiety has dropped so much that I felt the klonopin was too strong for me.
I must have a low tolerance to medications(would low be right-I'm backwards or dyslexic)because even at the hospital when the surgeon was going to put my shoulder back in place after one of my dislocations he told the nurse to start me at 5mg of morphine for the x-rays and it knocked me out cold.I woke up and my shoulder was done.I assume 5mg is not as much as he was planning on because he said he didn't want me out before the tests were done, and he used the word start-also they seemed surprised afterwards.
The fact that some people need more medication because of their size, but other medication size doesn't matter b/c our livers metabolize it is often confusing to me as well...and I'm certain that can't always be the case because I'm overweight.
I guess I always just say trial and error and whatever works.Has anything else changed and do you think it's working for you?
OP- ""..She said it will help with my anxiety for the following day? Is that how it works for everyone else?.."
Klonopin has such a long half-life (time until your body gets rid of half of it) that taking it at night, you would still have enough in your bloodstream the next day that it would still help you.
Some, many, doctors HATE to prescribe Klonopin unless it's a psychiatrist; that's normal. Good luck!

I have been taking Valium for my GAD the past 5 years and was recently switched to the Klonopin. This medication has no quick rescue feature like the Diazepam did and I've been taking it over 2 months waiting. Its only good feature for me is it helps with muscle pain. The only benzapine I haven't been prescribed is Xanax which is addictive, so I'm told. What benzapine isn't? So I may crap my pants but at least the muscle pain in my legs won't bother me.

Not sure if I'm reading your post right but klonopin actually has a very rapid effect, usually 15-20 minutes; they also make wafers for sub-lingual (under the tongue) dissolving, in 0.25 and 0.5mg strengths I believe; these give you that almost immediate rescue relief. Xanax doesnt work for very long, stick with the klonopin if you have really, really bad GAD. There are better options though if you don't have panic attacks and it's just GAD.

My G.P. also gave me script of klonopin. but I was told to take the higher dose 2 hours before bed as it will take that long to work for getting a better night sleep. He says that after 2 hours if I feel like I will not be able to get to sleep to take my lunesta.
During the day time I just take 1 mg, it does not make me sleepy at all and does seem to work fast with the pain relief.
The higher dose at night takes pain away but usually takes a hour or so to make me feel drowsy, also I have found if I take it on empty tummy it works much better and faster with the pain relief.
Could someone tell me what GAD stands for? I know I should know this but must have forgotten... Patsy

I have been on Klonipin ever since my husband's suicide almost 15 years ago, .5mgs up to 3 times per day. Just his past year it was upped to 1 - 2 tabs up to 3 times per day. I have to say I agree with the poster that said it is rapid acting, or atleast in my case it is. There are times when I am sleepy anyway that it does make me wanna nappie, but other than that it simply takes the edge off.
Obviously, it goes without saying (but saying it anyway) this has just been my experience with it for almost a decade and a half.
god bless,
amy
P.S.
Klonopin has been around a very long time and is indeed a Benzodiazepine such as Xanax, Valium, Ativan.... u get the picture. My doc told me it's the least addicting and I find that to be the case as well. Hope any of this helps.
ALSO... I believe that GAD is Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Thanks, I take up to 3 tablets of the 1mg Klonopin daily, I thought you may have to wait a period of time before it takes full affect, and after 2 months I'm becoming disappointed. I will ask about the wafers. Yes GAD Generalized Anxiety Disorder with panic features so severe it qualified me for disability along with a wide variety of other PHYSICAL problems. As an ex-alcoholic (4) years and counting I better find something that works fast, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the good useful information.

You have been on this for 2 months and found no help with it?
let doc know this. Some meds don't do a dang thing for one person and will help next one alot. It may be just your genetic make up. I have just recently found out that I have what they call a paradox effect with lots of meds, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I personal take 1mg of klonopin 3 diff times through out the day, i have no sleepiness from it (but I think it is causing sum constipation that I have never had before, I used to say my popper is the only thing that works good on this body.haha) but it does help me with my upper neck back and headaches alot and i can think clearer and seem to be just plain happier.
At night time I take 2mg 2 hours before bed and this dose does calm me down help me relax helps with the pain and I can usually dose off to sleep after 2 hours of taking it.
I also take neurontin lower dose during day and higher at night.
The doc did mention the wafers to me because at times I can not swallow .. thats a whole other book. and right now im swallowing okay..

It's a daily struggle. I guess you could say I was a 3rd generation alcoholic that finally saw the light after witnessing the chaos it caused and was starting to cause within my own family. Not a bible thumper but through my extended family at church I found support.
As for the Klonopin and GAD. Here's a analogy I use when trying to explain my anxiety issues. I'm riding on a roller coaster slowly to the highest point, seated in the front and just as I crest I'm not sure if there is any track leading to the bottom. I'm not the patient who thinks he's going to die, just the need to flee, get the hell off the roller coaster fast as possible. I've been through all the psychiatric tests and evaluations and they all have concluded that I ain't crazy, just extremely anxious. Klonopin seems to help maybe as a mood stabilizer, but when a panic attack sets in, for a good 45 minutes I'm as screwed up as a football bat and need to be alone.
Have a great pain free day!
Disabled individual learning to live and love life with whatever curve ball chronic pain may throw my way.
My doc has increased my klonopin to 8 to 10mg a day.
2mg 2 to 3 times during day and 4mg 1 to 2 hours before bed.
During the day time doses it does not make me sleepy, but takes away almost all my upper back and neck pain. And I have had no headaches. Also it gives me a clear head and I can think better.
The bed time dose has been helping me sleep and takes away pain enough to be comfy and sleep for almost 7 hours. I have not had to use my lunesta with this bed time dose of klonopin.
I do not wake up with any kind of hangover effect and I actually feel better than I have in a long time.
I do take neurontin that is helping with my legs and my right arm pain.
I'm so happy I have found something to take away some of my pains. I forgot what this felt like.
I also feel that a good night sleep makes for a better day all by itself. Patsy

My neuro wanted me to take 0.5 mg of klonopin at night and take a low dose of valium during the day. I told my psychatrist and he said it wasn't good to mix those. He said take one or the other. I'm not sure if that would be his reaction to xanax and klonopin, but my guess is some doctors don't want double treatment of drugs in similar families or maybe he doesn't like valium. I don't know.
I just take .25 mg three times a day and .5 at night, but lately I haven't been taking as much, because I feel there should be a limit to it...Anyhow I find that .5 is good for sleep.
Findings:
There are no gross abnormalities at the upper three cervical interspaces or the cervical-thorasic junction. Disc desiccation without disc protrusion is noted at T1-2. The second and third thoracic interspaces are normal.
At C5-6, there is mild to moderate disc desiccation with a 2mm central disc protrusion with slight central stenosis.
At C6-7, there is more moderate disc desiccation with a 3mm central disc protrusion with mild central stenosis but no direct spinal cord compression.
There is no evidence of nerve root canal stenosis or nerve root impingement at any cervical level. All of the facet joints are normal. The cervical cord is normal. There is no fracture or dislocation. There are no intradural or paraspinous masses.
My Cervical X-ray said:
Findings
AP, both obliques, open mouth, and lateral views of the cervical spine revealed very minimal hypertrophic uncovertebral joints at C5-6. On oblique view there is a suggestion of minimal osteophyte formation and foraminal impingement at C5-C6, especially on the left side. No fracture is seen.

I currenly take 1 mg of Klonopin at night. Im seeing my PM tomorrow and would like to ask hism to increase the dosage. I find it a FABULOUS med. It works for pain, anxiety, Panic, spams sleep. Is it unreasonable to take it 3 times a day? It does not make me groggy at all.

It's interesting to see how many people are being Rx'd this medicine for vastly different reasons; GAD, disabling panic disorder, pain, difficulty sleeping.. It increases the effects of opiate pain relievers, which might be why you feel a pain reduction.. it's definitely good for relaxing though too..
I've taken it for 8 years. If you don't take it a lot now, try not to ever. Keep it minimal, and things will be easier down the road. hurtzallot, your situation is different.. It's really easy to switch dosing and adjust to. I was ok at 0.5mg/day before, and now am fine at 3mg/day. 3 months ago I was at 1.5mg/day and ok. The ease with which you can shift your dosing around might deceive you into thinking you can stop taking it.. I tried, with a doctor's help. After 8 months, we were down to 0.5mg every other day, and I just couldn't quit it. Those of you just using it for sleep will probably have a much easier time stopping. For me, it's a GAD/Panic thing, and trying to stop it is like throwing my brain in a blender, to put it *very* nicely.
Ye have been fairly warned. =) Use with caution, it's not as nice to you when you try to say bye to it.

I'm on the exact same dosing as you 3 1mg a day. Was taking 30mgs of Valium (allowed) 10 @ night and 10 when I woke and with no constant sleep wake cycle it's a %$*&@. I would take the 3rd Valium if I knew there was a possibility of being put in any type of stressful situation. IMHO I climbed the ladder and reached the top where it was losing it's rescue effectiveness, thus the change to Klonopin. I would agree to stay away from benzapines all together if at all possible.
I've never heard of it be RX'd for sleep only, then again I know a Dr. who controlled a patients BP with Valium and still does. This was an extremely good medication for muscle spasms while I was going through 5 knee surgeries in less than a years time. Lose of mobility led to increased anxiety so here I am. I went a full month before the change to see where I was and it wasn't good.
