I know that neurontin is not officially a "pain med" but didn't know where else to post this. I've just been diagnosed with osteopenia or pre-osteoporosis. My foot doc ordered a bone scan as a result of my recently diagnosed stress fracture of the foot. I am 58 and have a very small frame (size 5-6 ring). But I was a runner for years and always was a walker until my lower back fusion and the resulting nerve damage and pain. Take hormone replacement therapy and vitamen supplements and have always
So here is my question....I have read that long term use of neurontin can "contribute" to bone loss? I'm trying to decide if I should try to stop taking it. Any thoughts?

I just got a very comical image of your size 5-6 ring

But seriously, you really should discuss with your doctor before stopping any meds, if what you say is true about neurontin, there may be another option for you to take.
Sorry to here about your new diagnosis, it sucks when something else pops up.
Keep strong.

OMG, that is funny! I will check with the doc. Ya know, it gets even worse as my stress fracture has now become a displaced bone situation and I have to have surgery. So now I have to learn how to walk with crutches and a walker and keep all my weight off my bad foot.
Thanks for the laugh. I needed it! And for your support!

Hi there,
I would discuss with your doctor as I'm not familiar with the side effects of Neurontin. I know they offer that or Lyrica and each have their own side effects but can be good for nerve pain.
I had a microdiscectomy (and a revision) and my doctors have me taking Oscal (over the counter) calcium. They have me taking it for a few reasons...my calcium was showing low after the 2nd surgery but even so, they suggested that since I'm 40 (ok 41) and have back issues in which bone was cut away, they want my bones to stay strong.
Since you are also on hormone replacement meds, there may be more options to ensure each are valuable.
p.s. your signature is quite uplifting. I am a former runner (had to quit last August when I ruptured my disc) and am now moved on to walking. It's such a pleasure to see that you are a glass if half full person....it gives me hope that I can continue to be a glass is half-full person.
