Neurontin Dose ?
Hi All,
Was at my PM appt yesterday reviewing my last mri and was told that there really wasn't anything that could really be done surgically or otherwise. Then she upped my Neurontin dose from 300mg a day to 3600mg a day. Is anyone else having success with Neurontin at this kind of dosage for nerve pain? Just curious.
Thanks Jeff

Hi and welcome to Spine-Health. Below is a link to some pointers our moderator Ron put together to help new members with the forum.
You went from 300mg/day to 3600mg/day???? Call the doctor to see if he/she really wanted you to make that kind of a jump.

Cervical myelopathy, 15 surgeries to date, Severe OA, bilateral knee replacements, DDD, 13 MRI’s, 4 sets of spinal cortisone procedures and dozens of cortisone shots in other areas for OA. Upcoming scheduled surgeries include laminectomy and removal of synovial cyst located at left facet joint of L4-L5 (may require fusion); Right resection of A-C joint (left was done 12 years ago, by far the most painful of all my surgeries)
Hi Jeff,
Do you mean a hop up to 3 x 600, I hope so, as giving you 12 times your original dose seems rather a rather drastic "over kill" to me , building up the dosis slowly and seeing what works for you personally would seem more sensible. I say this because there are some unfortunate side effects to this drug. I am on 3 x 600 per day and as far as tackling the miserable nerve pain I have, it is a success. However my short term memory suffers and my ability to concentrate. It makes me sleepy too.
There are some Chronic pain sufferers who are on higher doses and are having good pain relief from it, but others have had to weigh up the pain relief it gives, against the side effects interference in their lives. ( Those who need their memories and concentration intact so they can earn a living for example )

November 2004, fell down 18 metal outdoor steps.Had PLIF (L4-S1) in April 2007 for unstable spondylolisthesis, with bi-lateral pars fracture, and 2 herniated "flat" discs. PLIF with own bone, screws and rods.In July 2008 bone graft was discovered to be gone ..reabsorbed, and all screws are mobile, boring larger and larger holes in my vertebrae. One screw catching on L5 nerve causing excruciating pain down whole left leg. Seeing surgeon in January for revision surgery. Also have problems at T4,T5 &T6 Meds, Insomnia and restricted living and fed up of waiting at the mo.
3x600 here also.
3x400=1200 here

L5 s-1 mild posterior protrusion 9mm,disc findings are new as compaired to 6/22/2007,rhizotomy January 17 2008...
I certainly hope you were given a tirtration schedule to slowly increase as your body will allow.
I would double check with your doc to make sure you are on the same page.
I have great luck with Neurontin and have been on 1600mg 3 times a day for several years. It took me quite a while to build up to that dose.

Thanks for the replys,
No I'm stepping up 300mg a week so 330mg last week 600mg this week 900 next week and so on but she wrote it down for me and the end result is 3600 a day.
Anyone having this short term memory loss? And how bad does it get? Right now I'll trade some memory for some relief.
Jeff
Memory loss seems to be a "necessary evil" associated with Neurontin. Sometimes I can't even remember how to spell simple words...lol. Had the hardest time trying to spell "our" one day. I mean, it's not but 3 letters!
Quiz for the day: how do you spell your first name? This is not a timed quiz so you can take as much time as you need. The only two rules are that you can't look it up (ie: looking at your license) and you can't ask any one (ie: Hey Mom what's my name). Other than than you can use whatever means are at your disposal!

Neurontin
400mg 4x a day = 1600mg
I started out with only 1 300mg a day. The it worked to twice a day, then 2 400mg twice a day, then 3 and now 4 a day.
I cant think of any negative effects Neurontin has had for me.

I guess I'll just give it a try hope for the best , and see where that takes me. It would be nice though to get rid of some of this pain.

I can't remember ever having any memory loss issues with the Neurontin.
Maybe I just can't remember them.

Do any of you remember
at what dosage level you started to feel any relief? Right now I'm at 600mg a day plus vicodin and anti-inflamatory.

I started at 300mgs at night....

Almost a year ago, my doctor started me off with 100 mgs at night; now I'm at 1500 mgs a day and it finally seems like the right amount. I know if I try to take less, or run out for a day or 2, my back starts stinging and doing all the stuff it did before I started taking it along with 50 mgs nortriptyline and vicodin for other issues.
feeling some relief right after my first dose. It didn't fully take the pain away but it was like a blanket thrown over it...best way I can describe it. Can't remember what strength it was but have worked-up to where I am now.
I take 3 X 300mg every 6 hours. I can't take it at work due to unstableness but as soon as I get home I pop one then two at bedtime wow good nights sleep most of the time.
What did you say memory loss??? Oh that's why i forgot to order some stuff at work now I can blame it on Neurontin, Warning!!!! contains memory loss.
10/15/2007 work-related injury. I've herinated L-4 through S-1 and has annular tear in all disc plus done all the treatment that their is and maybe looking at surgery in the next few months but I don't know. ESI, Facet Injections, SI Injections, Nerve Blocks, Pain Blocks and any other blocks their is I had. On 2700mg of Neurotion, 1500mgs of Vicodion, 200mgs of Tramadol, and Mobic twice a day. I am a mess and still hurt like all get out.
Motto: Live one day at a time!
1800 mg a day plus some other goodies.
I'm up to 900mg a day. And am getting some relief. I'm hoping it continues with the increases.
Thanks
How's the side effects been?
"I tried to puree a rock...it didn't work..."
Not too bad but I forget words sometimes. I can picture what it is but I cant think of what word represents it. I'm in sales and It has been kinda rough doing a sales presentation while forgeting a few words here and there. If it gets worse I'll talk to my Doc I guess.
