Left C-5Herniation post ACDF Now shoulder-wrist pain also leg and ankle pain

Hi...had ACDF C5-7 in 06/2009 following MVA in 10/2008..Diagnosed with central cord syndrome, serious stenosis..had to have surgery due to numbness in both arms and fear of paralysis. Started having shoulder to elbow to wrist pain in May 2010..Had MRI which revealed disc bulging. herniation at left C-5..I now have pain not only in my left shoulder arms but also down my left leg from thigh to knee to ankle..this is all on left side..The pain and hyperreflexive symptoms have always been on left side..Could all the pain be from the cervical issues..I have not had any lower back pain issues that could account for the leg pain..who knows after my accident and surgery it seems I went from age 43 to 73 in a short time..I had one shot selective nerve root in the neck but did not have any change..I am very hesitant about more shots and surgery and now this leg stuff..i worry that maybe it is something not related to accident(cancer tumor I know thing dramatic but I am scared) but i am having difficulty finding information about left side only pain..I don;t know what doctor to see, neurolgist, neurosurgeon, rheumatologist..I'm scared..the drugs are not working effectively to deal with pain and working 40 hrs is getting more and more challenging..Can anyone add insight especially to the leg issues tied possibly to cervical..thanks...Amy

Fusion

Sorry to hear Fran your not having as great of results with the fusion. When you had the central cord issues did any doctor mention to you myleopathy? If that is the case it could becoming from your neck. Have you had a emg of your legs to see what the issues are.

A lot of times the leg issues can come off the lumbar, but also you could have another nerve issue in your leg causing the problem.

If I was in your shoes i would start with your primary and see what they say about the issue. Also one important thing is did you fuse? You might also go back and see your surgeon. I have always had good luck in having my surgeon diagnose in issues involving numbness. Whom is prescribing your meds? Could they be of any use in helping diagnose the issue.

Keep us posted on what you decided to do or find out.

Hi Amy ...

I haven't been told that the nerve pains and tingles that I am having are definately comings from my neck problems, but both my GP and my physiotherapist have said that they think they could be.

I had a lumbar fusion in March this year, and straight after that the terrible sciatica in both legs, went. Most other pains and symptoms also got better. Since about 3 months after surgery, slowly I am getting returning and new pains and tingling in both legs and feet. I also get lots of twitching, spasms and cramp in both my legs and feet.

Since before my surgery, I have had pain and symptoms in my neck, shoulders, arms and hands. These are getting worse and I also get twitches in both hands and arms and also cramp in the heel of my left hand. I also get frequent headaches and occassional vertigo.

I thought that hearing from someone else who is also getting symptoms in their legs and arms, might make you feel in good company. Wink

I'll be interested to hear what the doctor's opinion is, when you decide which one to go to.

I am waiting for the results of a cervical MRI.
I'll let you know when I hear something.

Hopefully someone else will come and post and we will both learn more about this.

Take good care. Hug

Any results on your mri..As

Any results on your mri..As to the question the doc said that I am completely fused c-5-7...no have not had emg of leg..had it done to my arms and there was minimal issues and carpal tunnel on one hand, where i now have numbness in middle finger..I am just so tired of the pain and not knowing which tree to bark up as to a cause..I really do not want surgery again unless my life is in danger or paralysis is imminent...my only worry is that my doctor will say sorry no more pain meds...i hate being on narcotics, i hate the looks and stares by the pharmacists..i am in so god damned much pain and i feel judged by them..hate the drug dealers that have made it so hard for us who really need the drugs to get through the day, and it isn't even a good day..i really hurt tonight and i just don't even know where to go next..i just feel there are no solutions just more pain..sorry just a bad day amy

Hi Amy ...

I am sorry that you had a bad day yesterday. I hope that today has been a bit better for you. Hug

These chronic conditions certainly get you down. I feel like I must try to not mention my various pains and symptoms, as everyone is getting very bored hearing about them.
It is hard not to talk about something that gets our attention every day, and causes us to wonder what is going on and where they are coming from.

Spine Health is a great place to come and talk, because you will be talking to people who can sympathise and know how wearing it can be. Sometimes they even have an idea of something helpful that you can do. Smile

I still don't have my MRI results!! I am trying to not think about it, as in the UK, it could be a very long time that I have to wait. I try to get consolation from the fact that, if it was bad, I hope they would call me in quickly. So no news is good news. Wink I do have an appointment to see the neurosurgeon in March next year. So perhaps that is when I will find out what is going on!!

Take care and I hope you feel more comfortable. Hug

Hi...I went to an orthopedic

Hi...I went to an orthopedic surgeon yesterday and he said based on my mri that my symptoms could not be from anything in my neck..the small herniation in c-4-5 would only cause symptoms in my upper shoulder..the pain numbness and tingling is now getting progressively worse in both arms and hearing yesterday that I will have to live with it is like a death sentence..I just want to know what is happening with my body..while i am relieved that i don't have to have surgery I am disappointed that there is no answer, nothing to do..I am wondering if I have something else..fibromylgia, MS,carpal tunnel..With the accident everything has been attributed to my neck..he did say the the spinal cord injury could be the cause but nothing can be definitive when dealing with a cord injury..thanks for letting me vent..I see my primary care doc next week..Amy

ACDF surgery C5 C6 symptoms worsening

My name is Tammy and I am new to here however, not new to the issues. I had ACDF surgery on April 27, 2014 and for the first two weeks felt great. Now fast forward every symptom you have talked about sounds like a carbon copy of me. What a nightmare. I am so happy I can now finally speak to someone else with the same issues. Seems sometimes so isolated. I have been to my GP who says it looks like the placement looks good, however I believe since my X-ray 3 months ago something has gone terribly wrong. I am currently taking a high dose of long acting medication which does not even touch the pain I am in. I have just taken a plane for a one hour trip to visit my mother and feel like I'm about to pass out for pain. Think my first stop is the ER. I will keep you posted. I really hope you will have the time to chat. Although I'm not sure how old these posts are.
