Scapula pain, chest pain

Dear All,

Pleasure to find this website!

I have a peculiar situation where in I am little confused with the symptoms that I am exhibiting and the situation I am in.

I am 27 year old male working with IT firm where in my job revolves at desk and traveling for meetings.

Symptoms/ Pain areas:

I started having upper chest pain and scapular pain of left side about 1 and half years ago. Being a smoker( 8-10 sticks a day for last 4 years) I began to panic and got my self checked. Initial X rays showed Straightening of Cervical spine and Mascular spasm. Chest X ray came absolutely clear.

As the pain gradually increased over next 6 months with tingling down to ring/little finger on left and index finger on right, I got myself checked for Chest CT scan and MRI screening of whole spine.

Chest CT scan showed only Mild apical thickening with normal finding on all aspects which my Lung specialist apparently an MD says is Scars / Marks left because of Pneumonia that i got when i was infant.

My neck MRI shows following results:

Minimum diffuse bulges of C4-5, C5-6, C6-7 discs, indenting the anterior sub arachnoid space. Early peridiscal osteophytes noted. Mild diffuse bulge of L5-S1 disc abutting the thecal disc.

My query is that since I am smoker, my symptoms are quite similar to Lund Cancer (Pancoast Tumor) or is it cause of my disc bulges. I have began to experience similar kind of pain at time on my right side. Chest pain, Scapular pain, pain extending to ring finger, little finger and index finger( very rarely though) and watery eye at times.

My doctor ( Pulmonologist) strongly suggested that it is cervical disc issue and I should see a Ortho Specialist.

Any feedback/ suggestion as to is it really cervical disc issue??

Thanks in advance for your time and help!!

Spine specialist

I would go and see a spine specialist and start going to physical therapy first. A bulging disc is not herniated, which in my opinion is great news! Again, this is my personal opinion, but smoking is not only doing damage to your lungs, but for someone with spine issues, it can make things worse. Ten years ago, I quit smoking and I am so glad I did.

Understand that there are people with bulging discs, herniated discs, osteophytes and they do not experience any symptoms. We are all different and some people are in excruciating pain, while others have none. Try some conservative treatments such as: physical therapy, massages, heat, stretching, yoga, meditation, etc. Take breaks if you work at the computer for hours and find ways to reduce stress. Good luck!

2011 ACDF C5-6 for Spondylosis with Myleopathy
2012 L4-5 herniated disc and hernated disc at C4/5
2013 Diagnosed with leg length discrepancy of 9mm (right tibia shorter) and wearing heel lift with mild scoliosis
2013 Taking Amitriptyline for headaches

Take your doctors advice,get

Take your doctors advice, get checked by a good Ortho. I had the same segments as you and my scapular was always very sore and sensitive and i had many problems with my arms and hands as well. I have lasting muscle weakness in my arms and hands because mine wasn't acted on quick enough.
