Soma vs. Zanaflex

I have been on and off Soma for about 1 1/2 years. It was working relatively well for my muscle spasms but lately it is just not cutting it.

I take 1 Soma usually twice during the day and then 2 at night.

I have heard about another muscle relaxer called Zanaflex.
Has anyone tried both? Which one worked better? At what dose compared to the Soma 350?

About 2 weeks ago I was started on the Fentanyl patch 50. It only seems to relieve the pain by about 30-40% for the first 2 days and then it doesn't seem to work at all. Can you use the Fentanyl patch and Zanaflex at the same time?

I see my PM dr. on Monday so, any information you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance - Camille

Soma/Fentanyl

Just wanted to say I also found the fentanyl to work the same way as you. BUT after 4-5 days I stopped- and went into severe withdrawl. This was weird because I NEVER had any issues before. Watch out for that stuff and coming off it especially. Using the Soma now for 2 days and it puts me to sleep- I havent had a chance to really SEE if it works. Recovering from a spinal fusion 11/20/08 and fracturing my back from a stupid spasm fall (Watch out for those too).

Prescription drug side effects

Unfortunately, no medication has ever put me to sleep except for when having surgery (thankfully!).

I do get some strange side effects from some drugs though:

Lortab/Vicodin - gives me diarrhea the day after I use it
Percocet - makes me itchy all over and makes me hyper (dr. says "excitable" not hyper but whatever!)
Antihistamine - wired beyond hyper
Paxil - wired beyond hyper
Xanax - actually made me have homicidal thoughts for no reason. One time at Vons, while at checkout, I started thinking about how I could jump over the belt and take the cashier by the back of the head and slam it into the side of the counter. Stopped Xananx that day. Was only on it for 1 1/2 weeks.

So far, I can start and stop meds without any reactions even after using them for many months at a time. I don't know if that is good or bad. Are they not working anyway? That's what it feels like.

I have read about the withdrawals from the patch but I don't know how to feel about that yet.

One thing I have to say though, I have never gotten any sign of constipation on any of these types of drugs. I was worried about this since I have limited bowel movements anyway due to being 6 years post-lapband surgery. Not much can go in so very limited can came out!

Will watch out for those falls too! LOL

Thanks for your reply - Camille

Update

First a correction. I am on the Fentanyl patch 25 not 50.

I saw the PM dr. on Monday, he refilled the Fentanyl and gave me samples of Zanaflex 4mg capsules.

I took one last night at about 10:00 pm. It started to help the muscles spasms by about 11:30 pm but did not make me drowsy at all. Then about 1:00am ( I was still awake of course ) it started to wear off. By like 1:45 am, I felt nothing.

So, it was another night with hardly any sleep and pain level at a 7 since the Fentanyl patch wears off after the 2nd night and this was the 3rd. Finally feel asleep at about 5:45 am only to get up at 8:15 am.

This is making me NUTS!!!!! I need to sleep! I need to have this pain under control! I am so rundown, my glands are swollen, getting a cough or cold, and just feel horrible.

I just started taking Zanaflex or the generic version of it Tizanidine. Not only did it not help the muscle spasms in my back, but it did not make me in the least drowsy. I, like Camille945, am wide awake at 1am. My doctor would not prescribe Soma, which actually works really well for me, because it was addictive, yet he had no problem filling other scripts for opioid medications. I think after trying every muscle relaxer under the sun, I would know what is best for me, but apparently a doctor who saw me for a whopping ten minutes knows better than my previous physicians. I am still in horrible pain. I wouldn't have gone to this doctor if I hadn't lost my insurance and couldn't afford my previous doctor who was awesome, because he listened to me and treated me like an adult, instead of like a two year old who doesn't know any better. As far as Fentanyl goes, stay away from it if at all possible. Ask about Morphine Sulfate Sustained Release if you need a long acting pain reliever.

If you look at the date of the post you are replying to, you will see that this thread is a year and a half old. The OP is no longer with Spine Health nor is the poster you are replying to.

zanaflex

I have been using this for 2 years, it works great at night, but it can make you a littke groggy in the day time. I take 2mg twice a day and 8mg at night. It is the only thing that allows me to get my much needed sleep.

the combination of oxycodone

the combination of oxycodone and soma is THE best pain reliever combo i haver ever used and have not had to up my dose in a very long time. Morphine is horrible and only has a 20% oral bioavailability. A very poor painkiller orally if you ask me. I would see if you could try the oxy/soma combo as for me it works wonders with little side effects.

right now I am hurting so

right now I am hurting so bad I can barely stand it. I go to Shands on 4-4-11 but the way I feel I dont know if I can wait. My oxy is not touching my pain. not even for a second. now my ins says it will not pay for zanaflex. so its back to the generic. I am so lost. No one has mentioned soma to me as all the Drs, know better than I. I am so frustrated.
