swollen and numb toes

This is an odd one but I figured I would take a shot and see if anyone has heard of this.

My left foot and toes started varying degrees of numbness within a year of my accident. (13 years ago)They checked my sciatica and ruled that out, but it was never a big deal. Then about three years ago my right foot started getting the same thing. It's hard to explain, but they feel kind of numb, kind of pain, not on the skin more like the bones. I thought maybe it was poor circulation but the doctor said I still had hairy toes.!

Then about 2 years ago I started getting swollen legs, mostly my right leg, and around the ankles. Lately my toes have been numb and always feel cold (I'm in the frozen north country) since they felt worse I took a look a few days ago and only the second toe on each foot was swollen and red in the last joint. weird..... One toe had a darker spot on the end.

Didn't think much of it but last night I checked again and the wife agreed it looked worse, more purple, like a blood blister. The toe on my other foot seems less swollen.

Naturally, I just had my monthly doctor visit last week.
I did some googling and they did say it can be caused by nerve damage but the location of my injury is not supposed to affect the feet. had a pretty good zing of pins and needles around my big toe last night.

Sorry for the long post but it is different!?

You are not the only one

I suffer from the same thing ... both feet ...toes ... almost looks and feels like frostbite .... redness icthing ... and then blood blisters (they eventually fall off) .... My Doctor attributed it more to periphral vascular disease than something neuro from my surgery .... funny thing though .... last winter after my surgery was the first time this ever occured. Are you a smoker??

I forgot to mention the

I forgot to mention the itching. Not my toes, but my ankles itch when they are swollen. Doctor figured my lower legs and ankles swell due to standing all day. I do smoke....6 cigs a day, as usual hoping to quit soon.

I will look up the periphral vascular disease, thanks.

Gee thats swell ....

I had swelling of my left ankle also .... My doctor took pulses .... posterial tibial and dorsalis pedis and there was a marked decrease on my left side .... next step would be doppler flow studies but I have no insurance .... so I will just live with it (die with it) for now. Smoking causes peripheral vascular constriction and is especially bad if you have PVD...I'm not preaching .... I'm a smoker also.
Regarding hairy toes ... mine were last year ... they are not now... Your hair grows even after you dead, so this really not a good diagnostic indicator ......
Double socks helped me a little bit .... elavating your feet above your heart is also suggested ....

I am not a doctor nor have I ever played one on TV .... I was a paramedic for many years ... many decades ago.

I did some reading and the

I did some reading and the symptons seem very similar to mine. But other than being a light smoker and male I don't seem to have many of the other common indicators. I just turned 50, not overweight, excellent cholesterol, low blood pressure, no diabetes, one of my docs said my bloodwork would qualify me to be an astronaut.

The other thing I'm not sure of is are the legs supposed to hurt? Especially with walking? Because I can walk fine without pain.

I will definitly talk to my doctor about this though, don't want any toes falling off.

If I quit smoking you have to also! smiley smiley smiley
