Annular Tear & DDD

Hello I am new and dont know where to post this.

I was told by my GP that I have DDD and an annular tear that showed on a recent MRI. As well as "Early bilateral facet arthritis."

The only thing he said was to go for physical therapy, and that the tear could rupture the disc.

And I would like to hear from anyone that has experience with an annular tear. Does physical therapy help this or can it make it worse? What do you do for the pain? I am unable to take pain medications.

I had to postpone physical therapy due to another health crisis and still have not been well enough. What do I do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Christine

Hi Sleeper

I have an annular tear and L5-S1 herniated disc impinging on nerve. I really need pain meds. You should look for a Pain Management clinic or Doctor. Take care. Charry

My experience with an

My experience with an annular tear & PT wasn't good, but I think it may be due to the fact that my injury happened at work, and I am going thru WCB. They put me in their fast track program, which I found too intense. PT may help you, just make sure that you don't overdo it. Talk to the therapist about how it makes you feel (this wasn't an option in the program I was in we had a handbook), from what I understand a good PT program will work with what you can do and expand on it. Good luck and let us know how you do.

tears

Hi Christine,

My doctor sent me PT based on X-rays that said I had severe DDD. It didn't help at all. 6 months later I had an MRI that showed 3 annular tears, every disc was bulging, and facet problems as well. She did not prescribe PT after seeing all that, so I'm assuming she didn't think more PT would help.

I'm also seeing a Pain Management doctor and she hasn't ordered PT either - or mentioned any kind of surgery yet. Maybe that depends on your pain levels. I think, unfortunately, that when you have DDD, tears and things are just a part of it that you might always have - that's sort of what my doctor told me. I've been doing the epidurals and taking pain meds and just "waiting it out". I've heard good things about acupuncture too - I just don't have the time, money or energy to try it yet, but I'd like to soon.

Strengthing your core muscles is a good idea, but since you have a tear, it might be best if you at least had a therapist show you the safest execises so you don't make it worse. So if your doctor recommends it and your careful and your therapist knows your whole situation, I think it might be worth giving it a try.

Mine was a grade 3 tear and had fusion

Hello, I have bulging discs, DDD, and during a myelogram they saw my L4/L5 was torn. During surgery they said it was almost torn in two and a side of it was gone. So everytime I moved, it was pinching nerves. I've had fusion to remove the disc and they put in cages with BMP to enhance the bone growth, but I'm still having pain. Sometimes it feels like the same pain as I had before. I'm hoping that once the fusion is grown together that I won't hurt anymore.

No, I don't think PT with a tear is really that good, except like someone else said, strengthening the core stomach muscles is supposed to help and not be too bad on tear. Anytime you have a tear, you are leaking fluid out of that disc. It's a herniation but not blowed out of the joints entirely. They are painful I can tell you that much.

The facet degeneration is painful too. Mine are badly degenerated and I get this popping noise as I move around from them. My NS said that after the fusion that the facts would eventually grow together too and not hit together so bad.

Not sure what to recommend to you...PT is always a voluntary thing. You go and do what you can. A good PT will not get you to do movements that would tear you worse or cause a complete blowout. Make sure you take a copy of your MRI.

I have been recently

I have been recently diagnosed with a torn annular disk and now they are going to put me through PT. I was hit by a semi and that is how this happened. Plus I have cervicle issues that we are going to do PT for. I call it Physical Hell. The pain I experience afterwards is awful. I am on meds for this too. What is an actual cure for the torn annular disk does anyone know?? Thank you
