Back pain after a myelogram

What do you do after you have a myelogram done and it causes you to have severe back problems. I had a myelogram done on 9/10/2007, and after the procedure it cause more problems to my middle back. Is there any solution on how to cope with the pain or what cause the pain? Would you call this a side effect? Sad

hi briteyz

welcome to this group of back people who know absolutely everything about the back..NOT. boy thats a very long time ago that you had the test. I've had three of them and on the last myelogram i had very severe pain but is subsided after the test. I would think it would be difficult to analyze now something that happened 2 yrs ago. did dr check it out after your myelogram. What kind of dr are you seeing? Is the pain you had before myelogram still the same?

?

Hi Pete

I had some pulling on the left side of my neck and shoulder after a car accident, so my family doctor suggested the myelogam.
It ws a neurosurgeon that did the myelogram. When he pulled the needle out of my back, that is when I got a ice cold sensation go thru the middle of my back. He said it was a little leak of medicine but it would go away. Two days later I started to have severe tightness in the middle of my back. Well it got to the point I could not walk far at all.
I went to 4 other Neurosurgeons and they say the medicine attacked bad muscle and nerves that I already had in my back. Which is a side effect from the procedure.
I did not have any other pain except for the pulling in my neck before the procedure. Now I can not walk or sit long and I can not work. What does it sound like to you?

hi briteyez

now that i hear what happened i went on the web and found article on myelogram. it states that in very rare cases there can be nerve damage. not being a dr i dont know what if anything can be done now. did any of the drs have a plan to bring back nerves? apparently what happened to you is very rare. i'm sorry you have to suffer thru this....pete

Hi Bev

I just sent you a PM. I understand you completely. I'm there. I hope that you can find someone to help you. What doctors are you seeing for this now? Are you seeing a PM doctor? I'm only seeing my PCP now. I don't know what to try next and neither does he. Take care and have a better day tomorrow.

Scared

Hi everyone. I just registered so I'm brand new here, but I have been researching my back problems on this site for a couple of years now, it has been so informative and strangely, comforting to find that I am not alone.

I have just returned from my orthopedic surgeon and he's scheduled a myelogram for me next week. I think I might be a big baby, because the thought of undergoing this test without sedation is kind of freaking me out. Silly, I know, considering how many cortisone injections I've had and the surgery, but I was OUT for those and I have a wonderful pain management doctor (Dr. XX of Cleveland) and orthopedic (Dr. XX) who always see to my comfort.

I guess I'm just wondering if this test is as uncomfortable as it seems, or if it sounds worse than it actually is.

Any info would be great, thanks so much.

hi mongakim

i have had many myelograms and it was just the very last test that gave me pain. the dr was trying to tilt me in order to get the dye into the neck. the pain was brief but severe. you may want to ask dr what % of patients get pain and if you could be partially sedated....pete

myelogram pain scared

I had my myelogram 3 weeks ago. I was fine, then my leg went numb. It all went away for about nearly a week, then pain and numbness has returned. The doc says it "will go away" could take a month. I'm scared of real damage having occurred . I have young kids and homeschool. I don't know how to live life if I'm not functional. Anyone had a similar experience??

Hi

I just wanted to tell you that I hope you get lots of new responses to your question. You know my thoughts on the problem we share. I just wanted to 'bump' this up for you. Wink

Hope others that had myelograms and suffered low back pain afterwards will respond and let you know how long their pain lasted.
Good luck,
Debbie
