Back Pain..Associated with an extra disc, L-6!

Hello all.
Im christina 22 yrs old. feel im too young to be having such severe back pain...I recently found out the possible source of all this pain, is from my x-ray and mri that i have an extra disc in my spine...after the l-5 there is a l-6. strange i know.
i have had this pain for over a year now, and they say its a little disc disease, sciatica, and unusual anatomy of my spine..
I have tried all the drugs under the sun, to find that anti imflammatory drugs DONT WORK. muscle relaxers DONT WORK. pain killers DONT WORK.
So a couple days ago, I went in for a steroid injection shot.
It was I belive a lateral. Which means i think that it was done on either side of my lower spine.
Im sure some of you have had these, so i dont need to say how horrible it hurts once they find that painful area they need to inject the medicine into. OUCH.damn
My question is :
Tomorrow will be day 3 sinse the shot, and I am yet to feel any sort of relief ...If anything, I feel it may be getting worse. If any of you have had this, when did you get relief...?
The docs werent so clear on what the hell exactly to expect...gotta love that.
but they told me some people it could take up to 5 DAYS to feel any benefit of the shot..
Any input on that?
I would appreciate alot!

thank you...so how long

thank you...so how long after the injections did it help you? did they not help you at all?
the doc said my next step would be an epidural shot in my back, which is a slightly different procedure. but im not looking forward to that pain of the shot.
even right now my back is killing me.
you know what i have noticed, maybe it my bed or just laying down for too long, but I wake up every morning crying like a baby, and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.-honest to god-
its such an uncomfortable pain, pinched in my back and numb down my butt and leg, mostly left side.
i hate it. whats wrong with you hun?...your back i mean?...
-now that i am having this problem, which calling any of it back pain seems just highly understated...haha. I sympathize for all of you guys..it is dibilitating...you know.

hello

i havent had those shots but i have learned that i was born with a extra disk too. i learn this after i had surgery L5/S1 fusion. i had my surgery back in april of this year. i know that i am early in the healing still but i would have thought i would feel some better but havent yet. so sometimes i seat here and think if that extra disk is the one that was really the one that was hurting me. i wish i have know this before surgery. but what is done is done and i know that i dont think i would have another surgery unless it was life or death. cause i tell you the healing time is crazy and will drive you nuts if you let it. hope you get to feeling better. i know i didnt help alot but i just saw that someone else was born with a extra disk and thought wow.

Well, thats cool. I mean it

Well, thats cool. I mean it sucks in our case because the extra disc is causing problems, but its nice to find someone with messed up anatomy like myself...haha. Where is your extra disc located?. Mine is under the l-5....im purdy sure. I know know the exact details, and doctors cud give two spits to enlighten me on them... About the only think one doc told me was that it is rare that a person can be born with an extra one, but in most cases i guess it in domant. Like it never causes pain. But in our case it does.
hmmm. thats so special Tongue haha. not.
so you had bak surgery..? thats intense...i been waiting on an appointment with a specialist at the Alaska Spine Institute next month that i been waiting on for several months. And they will determine whether or not surgery would benefit me...
Well, nice talking to you and thank you for your input.

Extra vertebrae

I was told it was rare, but not extremely rare to have extra vertebrae... I have not just one, but two and a half extra vertebrae in my lower back, but was never told the where they are... I have been dealing with lower back pain for just over 2 years now, and I was denied the injections, as the pain management doctor I was seeing didn't see a reason for me to have them... To this day I still have no clue what is wrong with my back, though my primary care doctor has diagnosed me with lumbar disc disease, due to the degeneration of the L5 and L6 discs, as well as poly neuropathy in both my legs and feet... I am still working on finding a doctor who specializes in back problems, as I am tired of being in pain, when muscle relaxers and anti-inflamatories don't do anything, I do get some relief with pain medication, but I am starting to have to take more than I should just to take the edge off the pain, and I too have a high pain tolerance...

As for the flexeril, it's a muscle relaxer, maybe it will work for you, but as I said above, those don't work for me... I hope it works for you though... ~smiles~

Pink Floyd rocks

..and it suites my mood at times. Being "Comfortably Numb" sounds damned good Cool

Anyway, Hi Christina. I'm sorry to hear about your back pain. I'm wondering what type of surgery is done for an extra disc? What exact symptoms does it cause? I don't have that, just severe DDD in L4-S1 along with scar tissue, and other problems. I can't sit, stand, walk, etc without a bunch of pain.

By the way, I HATE Flexeril; it really messes me up and one dose will have me sleeping for 2 days. I stick to Zanaflex for muscle spasms.
