Don't get epidural injections for pain

Please do NOT let your doctor send you for epidural steroid injections for pain!!! You WILL be sorry!!

I have Adhesive Arachnoiditis from injections. It is incurable with intractable pain!! I am on pains meds for the rest of my life now.

Here are the symptoms of AA (Adhesive Arachnoiditis)

Extreme lumbar and leg pain.
Numbness in feet - a "hot" feeling
Feeling of walking on broken glass
Feeling of bugs crawling on your skin or water dripping down legs
Cramps and spasms in legs and feet.
Tinnitus
Twitches
Nerve pain, especially in legs
Night disturbance (terrors)
Balance issues
Electric shock type pains

Spinal surgery can also leave you will AA. If you think that you may have AA, you must get an MRI with contrast for a neurosurgeon to diagnose this. Mine was diagnosed by a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Please come to our website to find out more about AA:

oh...

well i thought it was just the medications but maybe some of these symptoms were due to the injections then again...i see the surgery also have the same AA. Good info to know. Night terrors.....didn't have them until all of this started but i summed it up to the medication never thinking it could have been something else too. Thanks for the info.

So if surgery can cause AA

So if surgery can cause AA and injections also then what should we do stand on our head for pain ?
Medications can be addictive and kill you and so on and so on,

Assuming that everyone will get this condition from an injection would simply make an
Ass out of you and me, Ass-u-ming !

Smoking can cause cancer and fat foods can cause heart issues, Does that mean we stop eating,

Too much of anything can cause harm and thats a no brainer, So way too many injections of course can cause harm, So for that reason alarming everyone from geting an injection for pain when needed is overkill, Most are aware of the risk with injections and surgery and surgery has a much higher risk then an injection along with pt often help people recover and avoid surgery,

lol @ alexhurting

I agree there are risks to everything and all we do. I just took it as him giving information and really didn't pay attention nothing doing it at all. (I have already had it done) I just found it informative about night terrors but you make a valid point.

Alex,

Not everyone will get AA from surgeries, but the more surgeries you have, the more likely you will be injured. Right now I am working with a State Senator to introduce legislation to make it mandatory for consent forms to be given to patients getting surgery or injections, to know that they could be at risk for Adhesive Arachnoiditis and how crippling this illness is. They must sign before any invasive procedure is done on the spine.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with AA. I know a few others who do also and it isn't easy for them to manage their pain, but somehow they do manage.

Each of us in our journey of pain come across a diagnosis or a treatment that just makes us want to cry out from the mountain tops to bring it to everyone's attention.

When I see someone crying out so adamantly, it makes me wonder if that individual is getting all the help and support they need from their own medical team.

Of course I also laugh to myself, because in my head I hear the old Hee Haw song "Gloom, despair, and agony on me Deep, dark depression, excessive misery If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all Gloom, despair, and agony on me".

Sometimes I have thought of that as my theme song until I realized it was feeding the negative energy in my life. So then I took on another theme song by Chumbawamba "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down"

I guess what I am trying to say, is that I hope you have reserved time in your life to see the silver lining in the clouds.

Kindest Regards,

"C"

good job chagland

I agree each of us will have to embark on a journey to try to get pain relief. FOr some it will be a short and easy journey and for other it could be a long hall. After four surgeries i wanted to give up , after all the medications i could have given up but i didn't I either continued to want to live with pain relief and I look at the side effect from all the possible medication, surgeries, procedures and let that be the reason why i suffer in pain.
Nothing is 100% and nothing will have no affects. You have to take the good with the bad and believe that something will help you. 9 almost 10 years later the pain pump helping me. I could have just focused on the negative about the pump and/or it's medication but i kept positive and looked at my options. It is alright to be scared or even doubtful about side effects but dont let that have you in fear and in pain for the rest of your life. If you have time to fear then i wonder if your pain is already manageable. FOr some of us the pain was or is unbearable the side affects would be a down grade to the pain we are/were living everyday.
Good Luck.

Have too very much agree with alexhurting. What is the percentage of people who get injections get this. 1 out 5, 1 out of a 1000. You make it almost sound like it is a almost sure thing. Could other factors besides just getting the shot cause this? Or a combination of things?

I sustained nerve damage

I sustained nerve damage from surgery that i will be dealing with for life and even after a scs implant i am suffering,

But i am still not going to parade the forum telling everyone dont have surgery when there is no alternative to there spine issue and what hapened to me obviously dont hapen to everyone,

Same goes with injections, There is a long list of risks with injections not just AA,
Injections can also cause diebetes along with many other conditions,

Either in surgery or injections we are usualy already told all the risks involved and the list is as long as the medications side affects that takes up 90% of commercials on tv when advertising these drugs,

So even with medications we take the risks when we are out of options,
And if medications alone have so many negative side affects injections or surgery is 1 more step up that we try to avoid,

But when you cant avoid it and pain gets the best of us we have anything done even if the list is a mile long about the risks,

If we could of helped ourself then we would of avoided the dr,s all together and avoided all the risks,

Trust me i am usualy the last 1 to defend any dr as i have had my share of anger of being left with this kind of suffering after my surgery that no dr can correct,

And honestly i am tierd of being angry at the loss of my normal life and i already used up too much of my energy on it as it brings nothing positive in to my life to deal with my chronic pain,

I have shared on the forum what ADR surgery has caused so much complications in my life and nothing more i can say about it,

I cant tell any one else not to have ADR surgery if the posibility is there where it might work for them. Same as you cant say injection will cause someone harm when the posibility is there it can save them from having surgery,

So as you can see i am in the same boat as you are with nerve damage as you are with AA, Its a sad sad situation to have this kind of outcome affecting our life and we dont wish this on anyone as we know this sucks horses ass,

The AA condition has been brought up even with my situation about the posibility of having it, But i did not push to find out more as i already know they have no way to fix that same as what nerve damage diagnose that was giiven,

The warning should not be just injections as thats just a small part of the medical treatment,

Only thing people have to know is surgery does not fix everyones pain and yes can cause more damage and this is the reason most avoid it at all cost,

This would explain why some dr,s make you suffer so long before they agree to do surgery to make sure you have used up all alternative measures and make sure you cant heal on your own before puting you in such high risk of cuting you open and start poking around to try to fix something,

So if injection has less risk as of course it does then injection is still worth a shot ,

Lets face it not everyones case is simple and clear of what surgery is best, In some way the most lucky ones are who have a clear case of the cause and drs can clearly see if surgery is the only option and bamm they fix it and person is back on there horse and have nothing but positive results,

And then you have some of us who they have to do injections for months just to connect the dots to try to find the cause of pain, If they are not a 100% sure of the cause and you go in for a surgery that they thought would work, Now you were set up for failed back surgery its that simple,

Now you are back to having the same problem you had and just added another problem to it, This is why we stress geting a 2 nd opinion or even a 3 rd opinion to make sure all drs agree !

Its your spine and your body they are going to be messing with so you might as well get 2nd or 3 rd opinion to lower the risk factor % of having the wrong surgery,

So thats it for today boys and girls, Tune in next week on how to get back at your dr by puting dog poo in a paper bag on fire on his doorstep,
