Having no reflexes in either ankles and problems walking and bending

I am having severe problems with my back and legs, and just found out I have no reflexes in either of my ankles. I was wondering if there were any others that have or are going through this same type of problem. Any information would be great.

Welcome

First let me say welcome to spine-health. Have a look around and you will see others whom have issues walking. Issues with walking can be related to a number of different medical conditions. Can you tell us why they were checking your reflexes and what other test and so on you have had. Most of all members here whom have had issues with walking or reflex issues it is related back to our spines either from the lumbar or from conditions affecting the neck such as myelopathy. Have you had any images taken from your spine? If so what were the results of those images. What is your doctor suggesting that you do next to find out what is going on? There are many members here dealing with many different medical conditions and giving them more information might help that someone has a idea of how to help you. But keep in mind we are just patients and can't diagnose you either.

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health. Look forward to reading more of your post.

Welcome

Welcome to SH Stella. I have very little reflexes in my right foot after surgery. Nerve's are very slow to heal and hopefully over time they will regenerate. When I have a flare up I can feel pain in my ankles and knees. Not sure if it is referring pain or what. Have you had spine surgery?

Welcome Aboard

Hi Stella,

Glad to have you aboard. This is a great site. Lots of information and great people. As tamtam suggested, if you would give us a little background of what your issues are, we would be able to better comment on your questions. My issues are all in my cervical spine (neck), so I am not too familiar with with lower back. I imagine much of the treatments are the same. There are many people here with many different problems. I am sure someone or several could relate, if we have a little idea of your situation. Look forward to hearing back from you. Stay strong. Again, welcome to Spine-Health.

hi there

Hi there and welcome.
Indeed would love to learn more about why/who was checking your reflexes.

I did lose my left foot reflex and managed to overcome limping despite that. I was told I'd never get it back. Turns out...there's a different way you can test that ankle reflex to see if you have any - I either got a small reflex back OR never completely lost it. It was done by having me clasp my hands and applying some outward pull pressure at varying levels to see the response.

Anyhow, do tell us more and we can give you insights.

Hi

Both of my feet were tested for a reflex by a doctor about a month ago and it seems I don't have any either. I was also asked to hold my hands together and pull my fingers apart while he did the test (and I think it's so that we concentrate on something else so they have a chance of getting a more accurate result, but I'm only guessing).

I'm not sure why this was done, but once the doc confirmed he couldn't find one on either foot, he didn't seem overly bothered about it, so I'm not.

My physiotherapist couldn't find my reflexes either, but again, she didn't seem particularly worried about it.

I am curious to know if this is a symptom of my ongoing back problems, but forgot to ask.

SueD - initially I had lost my ankle reflex in the left foot and limp. I could not push up or walk on tip toes, my foot would collapse. The doctors would check and say "oh, ok" but they would say it's not a big deal. They said a lot of people lose that reflex and it's not a big deal. I thought without the reflex, I would always limp. Not true. Body mechanics got me walking fine....it was like a year later the glimpse of a reflex came back.

Now, for whether the lack of reflex is the cause of your back pain or a symptom of your back pain...I have to suspect it's a symptom of your back pain but I'm not a doctor.
