How much ibuprofen is too much.

Im 3 weeks post op, I am wondering how much ibuprofen is too much. I have 800s and the bottle/instructions say take as needed up to ever 4 hours. Additionally, i have oxycodone which also has 500mg of ibuprofen in it as well.

I am 220 lbs, good health otherwise.

On a few bad days i probably totalled up to 4000mg. I have cut down and end up with probably 3200 or less on average.

Anyone have any input. Im going to see my doctor and will ask about it.

I had a pain doc a while ago and i overheard him talking on the phone to another patient saying that this kind of dose is ok for short term, but he'd be really worried if it was longer.

as a nurse practitioner{and tony's wife}

i would say that you are on too much and i would see your doctor again .all antiinflamatorios can do a lot of harm even leading to heart attacks .so be care full .the standard UK amount to take in a 24 hour period is 400mg x3 max .there are exceptions where more is OK .tony uses his TENS machine ..have you got one? .my advice to you would be to see your doctor another problem is stomach problems ..you could be doing more harm than good .

Too much

I would talk to your doctor ASAP about the amount you are taking, I have never been prescribed more than 800mg 3x a day with food and make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Short term effects of too much ibuprofen is most likely stomach related and long term effects it can damage your kidneys, liver and cause an increase risk of heart issues. I hope your surgery went well and you will soon not have a need for a high amount of any of these type meds.

Good luck.

Just call and ask your dr,s

Just call and ask your dr,s nurse! They usualy will ask the dr and then tell you after looking at your file even on the phone. I have done it a few times. Thats the safest bet so you know they are ok with it or not. But either way yes i would minimize the intake of it either way. In my 20 years being on meds i always stay at the lower end on the dose that way you know if pain is totaly out of control then you can up it just enough to get some releif.

If a person is already at the highest dose then you have no direction to go when pain gets out of control. Good luck

3 weeks post op from what?

3 weeks post op from what? If it's a fusion any ibuprofen is too much. My doc says 2400 in one day is max. Yelled at me once when I told him how much otc I was taking. Prescribed painkillers and said to never take it again. He's backed off that a little but told me if I start taking it everyday again he wants to see me.

I called up my doctor and he

I called up my doctor and he told me that 3200 mg for as short as I took it is probably not an issue, but he did say to keep it at or under 3x800/day = 2400 from now on.
