Knee cap pain

My wife is experiencing kneecap pain and pain at the front of her thigh above the knee. She can not stand without pain and only gets relief when she lies down (on her side in fetal pose). She has back pain when she lies on her back. She had an MRI and was diagnosed with L3-L4 bulging desk and had an epidural shot 4 1/2 days ago. We have been told that the epidural might take up to 7 days to be effective. Really? I don't see ANY improvement yet. Am I being too anxious? Comments?

Hi Huskie

It took more than 10 days for me to get relief about 20% after back injections but had to get a series of 3 each year or so. They don't work for everyone but it can take down the inflammation for some people and it takes at least a week for some people.

Is the knee pain related to her back? I have had knee injections with steroids and I got relief from those. Hopefully her Dr. can follow her up and do a knee x-ray and ultrasound to make sure it's not a separate thing from the sciatica.

I was told to ice my back and leg for several days after the injections for 20 minutes for a few times a day. I use a cane on to take the pressure off my leg. It sounds like she needs some pain control. Does she take a nerve pain medication like Lyrica? I hope she gets better. Take care. Charry

Charry - thanks for

Charry - thanks for response. She has not been prescribed nerve pain medicine yet - I'll ask about it at her appointment tomorrow.

i do get knee pain related

i do get knee pain related to my back issues and it can get very painful. I've also had the injections in my lower back and for the first few days my pain was much worse. So bad i couldn't stand it but then it gradually got better and the pain subsided. Charry had a great idea to use a cane. I use mine when i have a bad pain day i find that i don't put the pressure on my leg that i do when i don't use it. Good luck to her.

RE: i do get knee pain related

Treatment of these various kneecap conditions depends on the diagnosis, however there are some general guidelines that can be followed. For more information, and for a diagnosis of your knee pain, it is important to see your doctor.
Rest:
Resting the injured knee to allow time for inflammation to subside is very important. Cross-training will allow you to keep in shape. When you do return to activity, do so gradually.
Physical Therapy:
Physical therapy is very important to balance the strength of the muscles around the knee joint. Most importantly, the quad and hamstring muscle groups should be flexible and balanced.
