Hi All,
I just got my MRI results back. After 2 months of severe lower back pain and im hoping some answers come out of it. Im seeing my GP tomorrow but it would be grreat to see what you guys all think.....
Conclusion was: L4/L5 Mild disc dessication with loss off invertebral disc space hight.
A small high signal area in the nucleus pulposos predominatley cenrally raises the possiblity of a small contained annular rupture without an associated protrusion.
Could this be the cause of my acute pain since late December or just another dead end in trying to find out what is wrong with my back!?!
Thanks
Psymon
L4l5 might have a leak in the disc. You might still need a discogram to confirm it,
Also depends if the disc space is small enough where might be causing compression on the nerve,
Problem is mri dont always show everything that might be causing pain,
Took years before i had discogram and disc was leaking and could not be saved,
Mri is a good start but keep pushing for more tests to confirm pain generator, emg , discogram or nerve block to confirm its that level,
Good luck
L4 L5 disc replacement in 2004=causing nerve damage'Flexicore disc. 2006 fusion same level leaving adr in. Fusion did nothing to releive the nerve pain.Pain clinic=every injection procedure avalable inc, razadamy, ablation, nerve stimulater trial, morphine pump trial all failed. Pain can be described as burning pain in lower spine penetrating in to left buttock, down left leg. Refuse to take lyrica or nuorontin do to its side effect,Leaving me with norco, valume, and flexiril at night.Which these medications only help with the muscle aches and stiffnes does nothing for the nerve pain from the nerve damage sustained from the adr surgery.Coming up nov.19th 2009 Lami, and hardware removal from fusion, for hardware just causing more pain in other areas.Hardware block comfirmed hardware is also causing pain in diferent area aside from the severe nerve pain on left side.Emg showed some posible problem above surgery are at L3 L4.
I'd just add to alexh - I had 2 discograms with very different results.
A discogram/discography is a good path to suggest but I think you need to be very clear on your interpretation. Both of mine I had a very similar experince - despite the interpretation given by the first radiologist. EMG's expericens I wouldn't care to state - they didn't contribute to anything, except aflot of immediate personal pain.
I think the pertintant statemnent is 'raises the possiblity of a small contained annular rupture without an associated protrusion.' which seems to state that ['raises the possiblity of'] their may be a disc protrusion ['a small contained annular rupture'] but it doesn;t affect anything ['without an associated protrusion'].
Ypu mention GP, so I'm guessing UK. Anyway, the prioirty would be the pain, which is probably either supression (i.e. medication) or root cause (i.e.physio/neurosurg/etc.. not a GP). The reality is porbably that a GP might not be able to answer your question and you need to seek a specialist - either through the GP or otherwise
take care J
** bump ** any more ideas?
What your GP tell you.?

Even if I could understand the mumbo jumbo of an MRI we members are ask to not give an opinion. Any information here is based on our own personal experiances and no one here has been trained to read MRI's, that I am aware of.
Please do feel free to ask us anything else and we will be more than happy to give our opinion.
I see you are new here and that explains why you are not aware of this. Please do not feel bad...you will learn.
Cheers

I am not a Doctor but I do watch House and Doc Martin on TV.
Never give up HOPE..June 18,2010 I had a pain pump implant....I now free of pain.
My thoughts and opinions are just that, my thoughts and my opinions, based on my experiances.
