Painful lump near site of L5-S1

Hi -

I'm new to this group. Introduced myself two weeks ago. I have a broad bulge and herniation at L5-S1 and smaller herniation at L3-4. (I also have cervical problems, but that's not my issue today.)
I have been in pain for 6 months with no significant improvement. When I started PT months back, I noticed a fleshy, movable lump under my skin to the R of my S1. My Pt said it was a benign fatty deposit. Pain Dr. thought it was a muscle spasm. It's size & pain would expand & shrink. After I had my first of 2 steroid injections it disappeared.
I did too much walking/sitting yesterday and now it has re-appeared. Bigger and quite painful to pressure.
Does anyone know what this is? Has anyone had this?
I'm seeing my Pain Dr Friday. I don't think I've ever gotten an answer about this & I'm scared.

Hi CDW

I have had a lump like that and found it eased up after injections also especially the SI and epidural injections. One Pain Management Dr. gave me Sacroiliac joint injections and a hip injection and that seemed to help as well as the epidurals.

It's good you're seeing your Pain Management Dr. and let him know it gets better with injections and gets bigger after walking and hope he will be able to help you with this. Icing may help after walking also. Yours may not be the same issue as mine but your Dr. will let be able to help you. Take care. Charry

Thanks so much Charry. Glad

Thanks so much Charry. Glad to know this isn't a bizarre thing. Looking at your condition, it sounds quite similar to mine. Low back stuff and cervical problems.

I still have mine and it's on the right side. It never went away and I have had lipomas in other areas and they always disappear but this doesn't and that's why I don't think mine is one. I was thinking of asking my Dr. for an ultrasound. It's kind of bothering me now just thinking about it. Maybe the SI Dr. who answers in SI joint posts may know what it is? Can you post in that forum? Charry
