What causes swelling in feet & legs? Does anyone know? Help please.

I have some pain in my legs, feet, and some light redness with swelling after 9 weeks post-op ALIF. I wonder what causes the swelling? Is it the inflammation from the nerves trying to heal and my body accepting the fusion? No one has explained this to me. However they did tell me NOT to take any anti-inflammatory meds. I have had my first herniated disc for almost 8 years and the second one was noted on the MRI early this year. I guess this healing process will take a long time for me. Please discuss your thoughts on the cause(s) of the leg and foot swelling.

Swelling in my legs

What kind of pain meds are you on? A lot of times narcotics will cause swelling in your feet and legs. They do me. I have to keep my legs elevated to keep the swelling down. Fluid pills do not help at all. I was (and still am) on Oxycodone for sometime before my legs started to swell, then a few months ago the swelling went down. Then when I had my last increase in my pain pump the swelling started again. I do not know if this is what is causing your swelling but it's just a thought.

please do not take anti-

please do not take anti- inflammatories without speaking with your doctor first. I'm pretty sure that your not supposed to take them while your still healing.Check with your surgeon before you take them.

it could be the sympathetic nerves

i too have had ALIF and like you my legs and feet have started to swell it very painful ..when i asked my consultant he told me that its the sympathetic nerves at the front of the spine .and that's as far as i know .all i know is i did not have this problems before the operation !

There are several conditions that can lead

to leg / ankle / foot swelling. Everyone above touched on areas relating to spinal problems and/or/with various medications.

Swelling of the lower extremities many times is a result of poor circulation. Swollen ankles is a sign of potential heart problems. How you place your legs/feet at the end of the day also can cause swelling. While I was in the midst of
my worse thoracic problems, the only way I could sleep was laying down on a couch and have my feet dangle off the edge of the couch. My feet started to swell and feel as though there was alot of fluid there. Bottom line, it was because
I was dangling my feet and the way I had my knees, I was getting proper circulation to the feet.

Not knowing any of your background or other conditions, its hard to actual pin point what is causing your swelling.
I would discuss this with your doctor to get correct and formal medical assistance.

Sending me to vascular surgeon for tests

Went to spinal doc yesterday and he's sending me to vascular surgeon due to swelling in my feet and legs for ultra sound and/or other tests. Had ALIF surgery 12 weeks ago. I have been walking a hour per day and putting feet up 2-3 times per day. I think swelling is due to inflammation from surgery since I still have a little swelling in my back and some pain there as well. Tried stocking again but doesn't seem to help with swelling now. Wondering will swelling go away once back is completely healed? Anybody else have similar problem?

i do have swelling in my legs

but also in my back, neck and arms. Sometimes its worse in my hips sometimes worse in my legs and sometimes it just all over. No one has said why just something to the affect of spinal cord damage causing it,but thats just a guess. No one seems to be worried about it because its not them having the problem Smile Smile

My butt is swollen, but...

.....that probably has more to do with all those donuts I ate than a side effect from my meds. Wink

Hello all!

Next week will be 4 weeks out from ALIF surgery. Right leg still swelling but left leg is about normal. Had ultrasound done on both legs for swelling and no clots found. However went to see vascular surgeon yesterday for results of ultrasound and he wants to do another ultrasound of my right side to determine cause of right leg swelling. Also have varicose veins in right leg. Since my back problems began about 8 years ago I have favored my right leg thus my left leg was and is smaller than my right. Vascular surgeon says he doesn't think what is causing swelling would cause heart attack or stroke. I have no history of these. Depending on what the new ultrasound shows, he may want to do another procedure where they run dye through veins and could possibly need to put a stin (sp?) in. I am not familiar with this procedure. Has anyone else had this done? Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

another path to research

Is perneal nerve injury entrapment (branch off of siatic bundle) or complex regional pain syndrome. Their are multiple threads of disscssion of the boards about these two condition.

Best of healing,
