Can someone please tell me who orders MRI'S!

Hi once again,

I am frustrated. I feel like I am always fighting for my health and I am tired of it!

I have had three neck surgeries. I have been having major problems with my neck and Thoracic spine.I have been seeing a pain specialist and I had been getting injections in my neck well now they no longer work. My neck pain increased along with my Thoracic spine and so has the TOS.

I went in to see my regular doc to see if we can order a couple of MRI's one for the Thoracic spine and the other my cervical spine because the pain is horrible I am living in a neck brace headaches the list goes on and on. So the doctor orders the MRI's.

Well then my insurance denies them and I had to write an appeal. Well the insurance allows for the T spine MRI and denies the cervical. So then I call my doctor and tell his nurse that we need to reinstate more info so the cervical MRI can be done. Well check this out, I get a call from his nurse telling me on my machine to call ymy pain specialist doctor and have him to order the MRI.

I was like what!!! Wait a minute your my doctor and the other doctor just deals with pain.

Can someone here please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the pain specialist just suppose to deal with getting the pain under control and not deal with x rays/MRI's? Isn't my doctor the one who has to order MRI's?

I am frustrated my doctors do not listen to me.

I live in Oregon is that the way things are done here, Who ever does the ordering?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

MRI's

I do understand your flustration. I have been dealing with Doctors for years myself, so believe me I do understand. It can really get one down.

If I am not mistaken your pain Doctor can order the cervical MRI since he is the one treating the pain in that area of your neck.

If I am not mistaken any MD you are seeing can order an MRI.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong.
Good Luck....and MERRY CHRISTMAS

MRI

Any Dr. can order one. But I think the insurance co. will Pay more attention if a spinal expert orders it. ie: Orthopedic or Neuro surgeon. But I think the next best would be your pain management Dr. But not your primary physician. :?
Good luck, Jim

MRI

hisbeauty,

My insurance has never been an issue (so far that is), but Jim is correct. My GP when I asked her for a script to update my x-rays and MRI's due to changing and increasing symptoms, she told me that a lot of insurance companies are getting fussy at which kind of doctor orders them! I asked her what she meant.

She told me that the area imaged meets higher approval percentages when ordered by a specialist of that body or (in my case) spine area. With my insurance I do not require approval ahead of time. I guess the insurance guys don't think a GP can tell if my neck is a mess? Hummm...insurance mentality...

Thank so much to all of you.

Thank so much to all of you. Yea I realized that was the case.

I talked to my surgeon nurse about setting an appointment for my neck. The problem is I just got done with doing a discogram for the lumbar spine.

I have to many things going on at once. I have lumbar issues and I have my T spine wanting to collapse like domino's, and a cervical spine I had three surgeries on is a total mess. I have nerve damage and TOS. Now I have a sense that another disc blew in my neck. So now when I move my neck it causes the Thoracic spine increased pain. So now I live in a neck brace and that does very little help at this point at least it is helping.

I have had a total of 15 surgeries and I am 43. how in the world could this happen. I had so much like you all going for me and now my life is doctors surgeries, insurances, injection as you know the list goes on.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas....

Okay well I finally had an

Okay well I finally had an MRI and I am glade I did.

In C3 C4 there is a herniated disc. My doctor is not quick to do surgery which is great! But the nerve on my left arm and hand might be from this disc so we are going to do a nerve study now.

And next week I have lumbar hardware removal...

Info

Welcome back! Glad to see you got your MRI, bummer that your disk is herniated - but at least you're finally getting answers. I too hope more surgery isn't on the list for you. I'm guessing once the EMG is done, your doctor will know more and the game plan will start?

Hardware removal surgery? Argh! Fingers crossed that you get relief from it. Gentle *HUGZ* to ya!
