car accident today= released from ACDF yesterday

How ironic is it? Yesterday was my first day back at work and today some one hit me? My NS was right when he said Cervical patients are magnets for auto accidents....

Anyway my car isn't too damaged, but the other car we think is totalled. I am now feeling neck pain and left arm dysfunction as well as right foot/let pain. We are heading down to the ER for x-rays....

My car insurance and their insurance suggest I go to the hospital to get checked out.

I will post more when I know more.

Julie

Damn

Don't ya hate that. I find that I am forever looking in the rearview mirror when I am stopped. I had one close call when I was waiting to make a turn and the guy coming down behind me changed lanes at the last second and there was a car flying up behind him. I hit the gas really fast and just avoided getting hit.

I find myself thinking about moving to the country all the time now to escape the traffic. Of course with my luck I'd hit a cow!!

Yep

I do the same thing. I'm a much more careful driver than I was before, but my husband would disagree. Ok, I can be a bit aggressive and have to control my roadrage (I only yell and give dirty looks, really, I mean that), but when I'm stopped at a light I'm staring into my rearview mirror nonstop. I'm terrified of being rearended at a stoplight.

I'm also very careful when I'm crossing a street at a green light and tend to slow down to make sure some insane texter isn't going to blow the red light and broadside me.

For many of us, cars started this whole thing and it's only natural that we're afraid it's going to make us suffer once again.

Julie, any news yet? Everything ok? Please let us know when you can.

Good luck Julie

I really hope all is well with you.I was in an accident four months after my surgery and i'm still suffering problems due to the accident. They now believe that i suffered a spinal cord concussion during the accident and there was no damage done to either car. Anyone who has had spine surgery is so vulnerable in a car. i used to hate getting in one so afraid that there was going to be an accident and it finally happened. Hopefully your outcome with be different.

Saying a prayer for you

I'm saying a prayer for you that all is ok and you are just a little sore from the impact.

You are super smart to have called the insurance company right away and head to the ER. Please let your surgeon know as well what happened so he is looking at the results.

If you need a re-MRI...you may want to call your surgeon b/c he may want you to go to the place that has done the others for easier image comparison.

I hope you are ok.

Just a short update

I had x-rays at the ER that night. I am trying to live my life and not think about it. That being said my pain is at worse that it was pre-surgery. My neck hurts to move it now, even putting on a hat, changing my clothes and gettig dressed makes me want to cry. My hand pain comes and goes with some numbness and tingling (not a lot) but I am back to dropping things and the hand pain is more specified to the tops of my hands and the middle finger through the pinky. I hope it is whiplash and this goes away because this is not any fun.

I see my NS in a couple more weeks (follow up from my surgery). I see my PC in a week and I am asking for a referral to Pain Management- I am coming to terms with my life and being in pain isn't as much fun as it used to be (small joke). The ER gave me Percocet and my NS had switched me to valium and the combo really helps me sleep- that is good news. I can't take that stuff during the day though and I was just about of the norco when the accident happened.

The ER doc said to expect a decent set back on the recovery but this seems more than I would expect. The sent the x-rays to the NS office. I would like to ask for a new MRI of my entire spine just to be safe. I have had some intersting pain in my low back but I think my hardware may need to come out. My rigth foot has taken to going numb 1-3 times a week while I am walking on it. Does it ever end?

Update on my Horners Syndrome- saw my eye guy again yesterday. He said it could be getting worse. He wants to wait till it is done fluctuating before he tries to fix the lid (super lazy eye not focussing well). Now we are looking at October. I am going to start the narrow angle glaucoma treatments in a few weeks and I have new bi-focal progressives coming to help me see my work computer.

I didn't realize that I suffer from chronic pain untill my last NS appt. But when I add it up it really adds up..... Pain will probably always be a big part of my life. I am now at terms with it. I just need help managing the meds adn finding the right combo for me (I think).

Update

OK- so the accident was almost 4 weeks ago. I had my follow up with my NS today. My neck/shoulder pain has been getting up to 8ish on the pain scale and medicated I go down to 3ish. My right forearm and pinky & ring finger have gone numb a few times but the absolute worst pain comes when I look up- it feels like my facet joints are locking and literally will send me to my knees. Plus I have pain raidiating right above my bra line. I want to say the neck pain is far worse than before my fusion. But the numbness and arm pain comes and goes and is not nearly as bad as it was.

They want to give it more time to heal. They think (him and a colleague) that I may have herniated the level or levels below my fusion in the accident. I am pretty sure I had bulges there before (definate shadows on my MRI's). I told him I can't live like this. I can't comb my hair/wash my hair or lift anything above shoulder level with out almost crying. I asked him to refer me for a nerve block and a pain manager.

He agreed. So hopefully next week or so I will find some relief however temporary it is. They told me to call them if the nerve block/steroid injection worked/didn't work and then they will schedule an MRI before my follow up in 8 weeks.

Now I am afraid if I tell my Primary Insurance Co they wont pay and will want Geico to pay.... I am afraid Geico will say I have a pre-existing condition and won't pay nothing..... Should I seek out a personal injury attorney? Advice? I have double health insurance, my personal auto insurance and the at fault driver's insurance.

Thanks- Julie

Let them fight it out

Oh Julie I'm so sorry. To go through all of this right after surgery is awful.

I'm dealing with no-fault for my injury so I know what you are thinking. First off get an attorney. They work on a percentage so you shouldnt have to lay anything out. You need to let no-fault know what is going on. They will pay and if they have a question they can fight it out with your health insurance. THey will assign someone to your case. Probably best if you explain your situation up front to them.

What a pain in the neck - literally!!
