Eye, Ear, Head, Neck

i know you're not doctors - just seeking anyone with similiar experience and/or speculation:

March 2008 - went to optometrist because of left eye pain similiar to having smoke blown in my eye..but was deeper than surface pain. minor inflammation found on surface cells - was given steroid drops but didn't use them.

May 2008 - went back to optometrist. left eye pain had "suddenly" become deep, piercing-stabbing-aching & extremely sensitive to light. no damage found; steroid drops were instantaneous pain relief but never lasting.

June 2008 - started up summer neck PT stretches (winter hurts too much) (eye didn't hurt "as bad"). day 3-4, left ear clogged up during one of the stretches. week 1, started having minor ear pain. worried that the "clogging" would create an infection (sinus?), started irrigating sinuses with warm salt water. quit doing PT stretches; seemed to be aggravating ear, shoulder, neck.

July 2008 - left ear & eye pain developed into "severe & deep", (wanted to go to ER) went to primary care doc. - suspected allergies + active ear infection. (completely deaf but odd richoting sounds inside head with LOUD tinninitus) given antibiotics, allergy med, nasal antihistamine, ear drops for pain, more steroids for eye.

August - Sept 2008 - 38 days after "all of the above" meds - repeatedly prescribed & taken - developed severe episodes of left sided: head pain, deep ear pain, eye pain, cheek pain, eye socket pain, lower jaw then upper jaw pain, lower then upper molar pain, roof of mouth pain, shingles pain. lasted 20 minutes every 2-3 hours. doc said, "neuropathy". gave me 45+ days of new antibiotic + Lyrica.

here's the issue now:
the severe episodes went away after 3 days and before i started "new treatment". the first 7 days of the "new antibiotic", i was to take TWO pills daily; afterwards, only ONE daily. the TWO pills seemed to keep everything calmed down. i'm on day FOUR of one pill...and the eye pain is like smoke in my eye again, the ear is clogging off & on - with occasional sharp pain.

can anyone relate to all of this? it feels like it's been going on forever - and now starting up again. i *can* hear now - so antibiotics seem to fix "some" of it but just not all of it - nor does it stay away.

the neck stretches aggravate everything...including my RIGHT SIDE arm/shoulder.

thanks in advance.

Well if you are having neck

Well if you are having neck and shoulder pain, you may have a disc problem or some sort of problem in your neck. The only way to decide that would be to have an x ray or mri of your cervical spine.

As far as the other things...I'm not sure, but when I first started showing signs of my problems I had dry eyes, then head pain, then shortly after neck pain when I laid down on my right side at night. Then the headaches and neck pain got progressively worse. I had ever test under the sun and went to the er twice for headaches. I had my MRI and X ray of cervical spine to find a herniated disc / ruptured disc, some osteoarthritis, bone spurs and impingement mostly on my left side. I have left shoulder pain, left shoulder blade pain, left side neck pain, back of neck pain, pain that goes into my left ear , pressing or nervy pain on the top left of my head, pain in my left eye, some sore jaw and teeth on left side. Doctor mainly thought a lot of it was depression making it worse so I got on cymbalta and Lexapro, klonopin, and then soma , and tylenol with codiene. Lately I've had the worst stiff and upper back pain.
I do believe the pain radiates up and I think head pain is connected to the neck, I don't care what my neuro says. I also get numb and left arm and hand pain.
This has been going on for almost a year now.

Hi Jasro

It would be reasonable for your Dr. to give you a referral to ENT (ear, nose, throat) Dr. and at least an xray or ct scan. I had 2 sinus surgeries and drainage and never experience eye pain. Of course everyone is different but with pain like yours at least a referral to ENT Doc. Take care and any sudden eye or head pain should be considered an emergency. Charry

Thanks

Thanks to both of you. an ENT is desirable but funds aren't available at this point.

vitamin B12

Hey, i was reading what you had to say and i have the same thing happening...I had dizziness and cohearence issues (which you don't list), neck pain at the nape and into my head (no pattern for the pain there, back, front, side to side). Also into eye sockets and sensitivity to light. Into sinus' as well.

My doctor sent me in for blood work and it came back as vitamin B12 defficiant. Took the pills for a while and it was getting better, then stopped (i'm bad with pills).

Now i'm on round 2 and will actually take the pills like i'm told Smile

For a while I was questioning Diabetes, that is not the case.

Will update when finished taking pills and get updated blood work.

If that doesn't fix the problem then i will go in for more serious tests, working on fixing 1 issue at a time.

Update

After "all of the above" - I found out I had 3 abscessed molars. Took forever to find funds to get them fixed - but I got it done. (Last month..Dec. '09)

I'm still having the same issues - though the molars were a huge suspect as the root cause. (No pun intended.) I know extractions take up to 6 mths to fully heal...but my issues are WORSE now and growing. Not suddenly worse...they just continue to grow and grow.

I truly believe my issues are from soft tissue damage with every movement that I make. (Sitting in a dentist's chair didn't help.) The curve in my neck is completely reversed (aka "reversal of cervical lordosis" or "cervical kyphosis") and I believe bones are bruising or damaging my spinal cord when I move around. I've read up on Whiplash injuries...and was stunned to find that even my coherence issues, nausea, dizziness, etc. could ALL be from repeated whiplash injury due to daily living.

I can clearly see on my MRI where the fluid around my spinal cord is lacking on one side and bulging out on the other. This would cause a bottleneck situation - which logic tells me is the reason for so many cranial/facial/brain function issues. They call it "Fibromyalgia" but I *think* they're full of baloney. I'm not a doctor - I'm a disabled accountant.

The ringing in my left ear is now being drowned out by the constant ringing in my head - which I confirmed wasn't due to meds (I quit them all for a while). It is so bad that it feels like my brain is ready to faint at all times. Or like I just inhaled a cigarette. Dizzy and SICK.

The systemic (whole body) inflammation that I have is so bad now that my eustachian tubes are sometimes swollen shut when I wake - and I'm deaf as a doorknob for a few hours on intermittent mornings. My Uvula (the little thingie hanging down in the back of one's throat) swells to 2-3 times it's size and at times is the size of a ping pong ball....scary but I manage to keep my cool until it goes back to normal. This doesn't even raise an eyebrow on my PCP's face.

I've been to an Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist (Nov. '08)who simply wanted to re-route my nasal passages because of a deviated septum (nasal passages aren't straight). I've lived with this nose for almost 50 years...and disagree that this is the cause for my angst. The strange systemic inflammation may make my septum *appear* worse than it actually IS...but do ya think for *one minute* that any doc is actually going to try to help me figure out what's really going on? Or are they just going to line their pockets with Medicare + "my" money?? Jaded? Yeah. I was sent (and am still paying for) a brain MRI because of diminished reflex in my left bicep. I wish I had known that MY NECK should've been suspect instead of MY BRAIN at the time...but I didn't so I continue to pay on this medical bill too. (That was before my cranial issues started.) (Nothing was found on brain MRI)

I can't lie down, sit up or stand in any manner or position to relieve any of this anymore...not even the "supine" (neck neutral) position. I take 800 mgs of Ibuprofen every 6 hrs and would give my narcotics up before I parted with Ibuprofen. Steroid packs only work for a while...but they DO work.

Can anyone relate to this? Since there's been 5,000 reads on the topic...I think you CAN. I'm miserable and feel my funds have been negligently expended by doctors referring me back and forth so that now I'm wiped out financially and cannot get help to help myself. Can anyone please redirect me in my search for some answers?

Thanking anyone and everyone..in advance.

Regards,
jasro

Hi Jasro

I'm sorry your issues are continuing. I had correction of my deviated septum done twice as I had so many problems with aching eyes and cheeks and ringing ears and continued infections and the ear ringing is gone. Time to time I still have a little tinnitus. I've had whiplash and the Valium really helped. I have a hyper-reflex in my neck and starting to have neck pains and have to go for x-rays. My Dr. put me on Lyrica for sharp neck pains. I also take Cymbalta as i have the leg sciatica and problems with my left arm and hand pain and numbness. This is my experience only. I think you need to find more opinions I hope you've gone for series of blood work. Keep looking for a Spine Specialist to help you. Take care. Charry

Wow Jasro....sounds like you are having an allergic reaction...

Sorry for the misery! If I were you I would do some research on allergic reaction to anti-inflammatories.You have ALOT of the symptoms. I certainly feel your frustration.Getting bounced around from Dr to Dr,and not getting any relief. And feeling like C@&*p the whole time.
Seriously,check out anti-inflammatory allergic reaction.
Hope you find some relief! Have a good day!
