hard to swallow

I have been dealing with pain (4/07)that started in Thoracic and within 6 months, I was unable to move my neck side to side and forward and backward. A mri of cercical found a herniation and oseophyt at 5/6. I suffer from muscle spasms and on the 13th they are going to inj botox into my thoracic and cervical muscles. I have tried about all the other inj to Radiofrequency.

Here is the question: It is difficult to swallow - i need to make sure i chew my food up alot! before i go to swallow. I feel like I have a lump in the front of my throat. I am in remission from Graves Disease (hyperthyroid) since 2004 - even had my thyroid checked out this fall when i dropped over 20 lbs. But the test came back fine.

Finally here is my question: Does anyone else have this difficult to swallow - feel like there is a lump in the front of your throat?

i will speak with my doctor of course, but any ideas or experience?

Digestive Dr

Hey Baffled,

I was hoping someone would answer this question but I see no takers yet. So let me try a little. I have major swallowing issues, but I have gone through surgery as well. Now since I didn't really didn't want to go back into surgery I sought out a digestive disease specialist. The dr ordered up a barrium swallow test. The test itself, is not to bad, it is only difficult if you have a obstruction blocking the passage. Also the same Dr at the sametime ordered a upper GI. Anyway the test revealed, in my case, most was due to a hardware issue. However it also showed some other things that are also causing issues. Now with the hardware removed we are waiting to see if it will calm down on it's own. If not we will be stretching the esophagus to aid with the issues. Now the question is wether your spine is causing the issues that would be hard to say. I think that a swallow test is the way to go to rule out any other issues. I will say one thing that helped for me is to make sure i was never looking down when swallowing as if you were looking at your plate of food. Another thing that help is I reduced my intake of acid products as well. Drinking just good old water has helped as well. I was told when i seen the digestive doctor that many things can cause swallowing issues. If i can help in any other way don't hesitate to pm me.

thaks for your input

I did have a swallow test summer 07 - ordered by pcp - it turned out fine....not to say there isn't something else to look at.

i had to laugh when you said, looking down - it is so true. My thoughts run to the idea that my muscles are so spasmatic, that could they be 'constriting' things.

the doc for the botox is a physistic (phy med/rehab) - so far i am coming up with a list of questions for the 13th.

thank you again for your input - it seems to be that the swallow thing is after the surgeries - not before

I have a C5-6 herniation

I have a C5-6 herniation with compression and osteophytes and now that you mention it I do have a throat thing going on. I haven't had surgery yet, so it isn't that....

glad to know

Glad to know i am not alone - i can't explain it - liquid, solids, it doesn't matter, i have to like "push" the items down. It is not all the time, but happens more than not.

I try not to think about it - so i don't actually do it to myself, but then, i will get something sorta stuck and there it is in my head.

thanks for letting me know it goes on with you - without surgery.
