Neck pain, headache and left hand numbness

This is my first post. I had ACDF 9/28/2009 and still having problems.Radiology report in September. (C5-C6 Right posterolateral disc herniation touches the anterior margin of the right cervical hemicord with effacement of the right subarticular recess and right exiting foramen. There is neural impingement within the right right exiting foramen. There is circumferential disc bulge which partially effaces the thecal sac anteriorly. C6-C7 Bulge indents the thecal sac. C7-T1 circumferential disc bulge.) Surgery went well, had pain after surgery in my right shoulder and down my right arm. The numbness in my right hand went away immediately. After several weeks the pain in my right arm and shoulder also went away. I went back to work December 9, 2009. I saw my neurosurgeon in December 2009 and he ordered a MRI. He discussed with me the possibility my fusion not working. He was concerned about my new left hand numbness and a little concerned that I hurt when I over do, but his main concern is my weight ( which I had prior to surgery). Needless to say I did not have a pleasant visit. I last say my neurosurgeon January 29, 2010 and asked him to release me because his concern is me losing weight. When I saw him on this final visit I told him my left palm and thumb, and first three fingers are always numb. I did not have this before or immediately after my surgery. He talked to me about new MRI results which are as follows: (C4-C5 minimal disc bulge with early small uncovertebral joint osteophytes, no canal or forminal stenosis. C5-C6 is intact with fusion. C6-C7 Disc desiccation with disc bulging narrowing the anterior subarachoid space with minimal anterior cord flattening and mild AP canal stenosis. C7-T1 small left paracentral disc profusion into the left lateral recess with out cord or nerve root compression. Borderline AP canal diameter of 10mm. I guess my complaint is the constant tightness in my chest, left hand numbness and not being able to do normal things (house cleaning) without hurting in my right arm. To all of you who have more experience than I, should I be concerned and fine another NS or just let the sleeping dog sleep?

Hi Raynana

Our medical history and symptoms are very similar. I had c3 thru c7 fused last June along with corpectomy of c5 and c6. Currently I experience left hand numbness of my last three fingers on my left hand along with pain in both hands. My current cat scan showed nothing that alarmed the surgeon but since my plate is backing out and I felt something shift in my neck we are going ahead with posterior fusion March 13th. I have a history of a total of 4 cervical surgeries to date and my surgeon does not want to take the chance. He feels my neck is not stable. Before it was discovered that the plate was backing out he stated the pain and numbness is due to nerve damage. Will the new surgery help these symptoms? Maybe not. I know this going in. If you do not feel secure with the answers you are getting from your surgeon perhaps a second opinion is in order. As far as the surgeon telling you to lose weight., there is truth to what he is telling you. It does help. I was overweight by 35lbs on a previous neck surgery and was told for every 10 lbs of weight I lose it would take 30lbs of pressure off my spine. After being insulted thinking my surgeon was telling me I was fat..lol. I took action and lost the weight. Did it make a difference? YES. To this day if my weight flucuates more then 10 lbs I notice my pain levels begin to rise. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me and welcome to spine health.

Neck and arm pain

After reading your post I don't even want to have my neck checked out. It's a scary thing! I am having a lot of neck pain and the pain goes down my arm into my thumb and sometimes my three middle fingers. What level in my neck do you think that may be coming from? I'm suppose to go for a EMG this Thursday to see if there is any nerve damage. I had a MRI two years ago which showed bone spurs in my neck so I guess it's just getting worse. The pain is almost constant in my neck not always so bad in my arm. I have terrible migraines so I'm thinking maybe some of the pain is coming from my neck. Oh I forgot to mention I've already had back surgery and brain surgery, need I add any more surgeries to my list!

Many Blessings,

Cindy

hello all

me too with some of the same symptoms. i had ACDF-c/5-c/6 level last june 09. i thought the surgey had worked for the first few mths., but recently since about nov. i guess, the pain is back in my neck , and is more severe now. i can hardly turn my neck, the upper part of my back burns intensly, and feels so tight. the pain shoots down my arms, and my left index finger and thumb. and need i add , that i do not know if it effecting my lower back or not, but it is so bad also, or is it something totally different?? i seen my Neurosurgeon last week, i have a cat scan scheduled for this friday, the 26th, he thinks maybe some of the hardware has shifted also like you JLRFRYE". that is what i am scared of . i guess i will have to wait and see , i have follow up appt. on March 11th for results. all i know is something is definately wrong. as far as your weight RNAYNAY", i am overweight also, i have put on about 25 lbs. since being off work end of may 2008. with meds, and non-activity. my drs. , have not brought up weight as a priority at all. Until i seen this one rheumitologist, that was rude, and did not understand my pain at all, and thought that i should do jazzerize! needless to say i left there crying, and did not go back. yes i agree about the weightloss, but unless you are morbidly obese, i am depressed enough about everything else, please don't make me worry about every little thing i put in my mouth also. my husband tells me i am fine, not to worry about it, and makes me feel better. i believe the weight will come off one day, when i get better if that is soon i hope. take care all LEOCAT Ttthand Nailbite Worried

2nd ACDF

After posting the following I finally found a NS who would see me. No one in my state would touch me. The first thing my new NS did was take an xray of my neck. I kept trying to get previous NS to do this but he would not. My NS showed me the xray. One of the screws from the plate had completely went through my C6 vertebrae and fractured it. The cadaver bone that was put in 9/28/09 was gone or so it appeared on the film, so I had a myleogram (horrible headache for a week even after blood patch. The myleogram confirmed what NS thought, so on 9/27/2010 I had plate and screws removed. I did have some what of the bone left so my NS let my c5/c6 vertebrae rest on each other with the bible thin paper cadaver bone between. I am wearing a cervical bone stimulator (which increases my pain). I need some words of encouragement. I still am in pain. My chest feels broken my neck, upper back hurts and I have the pain in both shoulders and down my arm. I also have swelling on the back of my neck. I returned to work 33 days after the surgery. I am a teacher, but I rarely sit. I teach math so I am constantly working at the board or walking around. I am very frustrated, hurting and tired. Will this ever end. My NS also told me if he doesn't see any improvement by December he wants to go back in from the posterior, clean out all the scar tissue and replace the donor bone the correct way. Help........
