Neck Pain/Headaches

Hi everyone. I'm a 42 yr. old female and I've had terrible neck pain for several years. Just had an MRI a couple of weeks ago and nurse called and said I have bone spurs. I see my neurologist Thursday. I hope he can help somehow. Do any of you wake at all hours of the night with headaches? Also, can cervical spurs cause elbow pain too? I have so many questions I don't know which to ask. I'll probably have even more after seeing the dr. What treatments have any of you had for cervical spurs? Did it help?

Hi Sunny

I did not have bone spurs, I had a herniated disc in my neck and had surgery in March '08. I had numbness down my arms and fingers, worse on the left. Also some pain in my arm. I did have pain in my neck that would wake me up and sometimes with a headache too. The pain was worse in my neck, I tried Chiro and PT with no relief.
I had a good friend that had a herniated disc and spurs in her neck and the symptons were about the same. We both had surgery by the same surgeon and had great outcomes.
Let me know about your Neuro visit on Thursday. I hope your Neuro Doc can find some options for you to try. If you think of more questions just PM me and I will be glad to let you know anything I have learned.

Welcome to Spine Health. I have suffered with headaches that wake me up at night and ones that are there constantly. I had surgery in 07 that took care of the worst of it, and now I just have head pain, which is easier to deal with. I also have issues that cause pain in my elbow, but it isn't related to bone spurs.

Wait and see what the neurologist has to say and go from there. Do you have a list of questions written down that you can take with you? It really helps and keeps you from walking out and thinking "rats, I forgot to ask about ..."

Hang in there and keep us posted.

Good idea. Write down all of your symptoms, as you may have a bad day and not be able to fully recall everything.
Ask about medications, steroid injections, surgery, pillows, posture-anything at all related to your neck.
Also activities to avoid.
I think these spurs are a fairly common and normal thing. Eventually they can fuse together with a loss of mobility.
They can impinge on the spine and give you all sorts of pains in the head, neck, shoulders and arms.
Avoid long spells at a desk and especially enemy number one, the computer!

Thank you all so much

Good idea. I will write down everything I can think of. I do forget when I'm talking to him. Besides, he has me on neurontin which makes me forget all anyway. I'll let you know how it goes. I'd just like to get some relief. Thanks again.

CHRONIC PAIN

Hello Everyone,

I am so glad I found this site, now I dont feel as lonley Iam can talk with people who know what it feels like to walk in the shadow of pain every day.

My name is Amy I live in CT and I have been in chronic life stopping pain since 1993 when I fell on black ice in a parking lot flat on my back and my neck snaping back.
Result of this I have had 3 back surgies in which fusions then fusion hard ware removal and then a pain stimulator which did not work, and I am left with wires still in my back and I quess I was told that I need and back surgery to fix a part of the fusion that did not ever heal, imagine that !!! Any now for the neck issue, I have fusions at 4-5 and 5-6 levels screws and all. For the last 3 weeks the head pressure that starts at my neck and goes up my head is sooo bad, I can not stand it. The only thing that relieves it a little bit is wearing a soft collar neck brace.
I know for a fact my fusions in my failed so I FACE THE KNIFE AGAIN. If that is I can find a good surgeon the first one messed me up I had been told by 3 doctors.
I have spent all of my past career saving other people from being a EMT, medical assistant and a adoptive mother, why can't someone save me, I am tired of being in pain and one ss disability. I hope everyone had a nice hoilday, I feel better poring my feels out.

Thanks
AmyCT

I have a few minor to

I have a few minor to moderate things going on with my neck...Bone spurs, impingement, arthritis, two disc herniation, DDD... The list is in my sig.
I've tried Physical therapy. The first time it helped while doing it, but after not so much. The second time was better, I think because my depression is down. But I still have left arm, wrist, finger, shoulder, left side of the neck pain.
Oh, yes and to answer your question, I've had terrible headaches. Now I pretty much get aches at the base of my skull and neck and up around the left eye and side of my face. Nothing really helps those except to lay down take the pain med, add heat or ice to the neck and wait for it to subside.

Good luck!

Hi ButterflyPain

These headaches are very tiresome aren't they? It's hard to face them everyday and night. I hope you find a cure....I hope we all do. I hope to at least learn if there's something I can do to help mine when I go back to the dr.

Hi Sunny1966 I feel your pain!

Hi...I have had migraines most of my life, but the last few years I have noticed they are directly coming from my neck and base of my skull. I found out I have c3/4 and c6/7 herniations and arthritis, and yes they contribute to my migraines. I had the facet injections done, steroids, and an epidural. Not too much relief so now I am going for a Rhizotomy/Denervation to kill the nerves. I wish you luck and know there are some good treatments out there.
Be well

Hi cocoser

Thank you for your reply. Sorry that you too have these problems but I thank you for being here to share and understand. It means a lot to know the people on here know exactly what we go through each day. Take care and good luck. I've never heard of the Rhizotomy. I'll google it. I had a mortons neuroma removed from my foot and have a stump neuroma...so I'd like to stay away from removing nerves if possible. That can drive you crazy!

I'm frustrated

Had my neuro appt this morning. Forgot my list of questions, also forgot most of them while there! So much for that. Anyway, he said I have a bunch of spurs (He didn't say where or how many) Wants me to see a neurosurgeon to discuss my films. So, I really didn't find out anything today so now I wait for another appt. He just wanted to up my neurontin and I said no because I can't remember anything now. He gave me a script for muscle relaxers. I forgot to ask for any pain meds. I always do. So, I guess I'm just frustrated with all of this you know? Thanks for letting me vent on here. Maybe I'll get it out of my system before hubby comes home. He'll appreciate you all too..lol Oh yeah, I called back and asked for a copy of my MRI report and they said it would be $20 so I told them to forget it. I'll just wait and ask the neurosurgeon for it.
