Tightness in neck and shoulder, numbness and tingling

Hey guys,

For the past month I have been experiencing a tightness in my left neck and shoulder, as well as tingling a little in my left arm, and occasionally numbness behind my shoulder the creeps up the neck behind my ear. It's not really that painful, but more of a bothersome and distracting sensation. The weird thing is that it is not that consistent. It will be fairly subdued for a few days and then may flare up again, especially if I stay up late drinking alcohol. I was thinking that perhaps it was a herniated disc, but I read online that it could also be anxiety.

Personally, I think it cannot only be anxiety because even when I am not stressed out, I can feel some of the numbness and tightness and when I tend to dwell on my symptoms, only then do I begin to feel anxious. Now that is has been about a month with these symptoms, should I consider going to see a doctor? To reiterate, really experience no muscle weakness or any serious symptoms, other than the distracting numbness and tingling and the rare tightening sensation in my neck/shoulder. Sometimes that tightness can be felt in my upper chest, right below my collar bone.

I would love to read some of your comments/advice. Thanks!

c-spine ddd, numbness and tingling

I have been diagnosed with mod.-severe ddd, mostly in C5-6, 6-7, along with spondololysthesis, osteophytes, stenosis, and a buckled ligamentum flavum, all of which may be impinging on my spinal cord. Looking at probable one- or two-level fusion, according to my surgeon, although waiting for MRI confirmation. Last night, in addition to tingling/numbness in hands/arms, I'm also experiencing this in my legs, plus burning sensations. Could this also be caused by my c-spine issues? Sometimes my balance feels off, too.

Go to a Dr

Im not a DR and not qualified to give you medical advice but if you have numbness and tingling most likely a nerve is being pinched somewhere. It may not be bothersome now but a nerve that is pinched for a long time can have permanent damage, I speak from personal experience.
Usually a Dr will order an X-ray which will only show bones and alignment. If the x-ray doesn't show anything conclusive you can ask for an MRI and even an EMG. The MRI will show pictures of soft tissue, ligaments, discs etc. The EMG will show if there is any damage to the nerves.
Let us know what you find out.

I have moderate stenosis in my C3-4 and C5-6 along with moderate DDD. I have a moderate herniated disk in the C5/6 too. I am also having tingling sensations in my left leg. Sometimes a buzzing feeling and when I touch the back of my neck I get these electrical zaps down my left leg. I've been very unbalanced too with some dizziness. Just wanted to reply back to you because I do feel that mine is caused from my neck. But I can't get my Drs to understand why. My thoracic and lumbar spine are all good....so they want me to see a neurologist. I've been waiting for 4 months to see him, appt is end of Aug.
Best wishes for you and I hope things go well!

I have experienced the same

I have experienced the same symptoms you describe. My MRI says mild to moderate stenosis. My doctors don't understand what I'm going through. Left neck and shoulder blade pain with numbness and nerve irritation . I do not feel stable when I walk which triggers severe anxiety.

ADCF C4/C5

I had adcf surgery 4 weeks ago due to numbness in hands and tingling in arms. I am a golfer and 56 yr old female. Post surgery I am in the same pain I was prior to surgery. I have Kaiser and neurosurgeon says it can take up to 6 months or longer to feel relief. MRI showed C4 pushing against my spine. The surgery was to relief that pressure, I thought it was to relieve my pain. I was very upset and emotional but some websites I read say you have to remain positive. That is my only hope right now.

Similar situation

I have DDD and herniation of l4l5 Si. I had a micro performed in Jun of 2013 and then reherniated. Since then I've had 2 ESI and started aqua therapy. Yesterday I spent the entire day in bed. I know that's the worst thing to do but I was in so much pain I literally couldn't stand for more that 5-10 minutes.

I have also started experiencing pain in the left side of my neck/collar bone and my right arm is sore . My hands keep feeling like they are falling asleep and getting tingles when I bend my elbows.

I feel like I'm totally loosing my mind. I don't know if I should call my Dr or tell my PT? I feel like all I do is complain. Is it possible that aqua therapy is making symptoms worse even though its gentle?

Herniation of l5 S1 l4 , DDD , microdisectomy in June 2013 and re herniation in September
Cervical herniation at C5-7 Jan 2014 with impingement of spinal cord. 2 level cervical fusion Feb. 2014 and 2 level lumbar fusion in April 2014

I to have issues with the neck, I have bulging discs. It is weird that you say you notice it flare up more when you have been drinking. I have noticed this myself and seen another post a while back about another guy having the same issue. I could sometime tell the diference after just two or three beers. "The doctor says that has nothing to do with it" I really think there is some kind of connection there as it happened alot to me before. It does not seem to happen now but i have been thru therapy and other things but i tell you it used to happen everytime i drank a few.
