Going For EMG/Nerve test on leg again

I have to go for an EMG/nerve test on my left leg again because of increased numbness and tingling in my left side calf and foot and toes and increased back pain. I was unable to complete the first EMG due to so much pain from them inserting the probes it was unbearable. I have nerve compression at L4-5 for what part of the test I had done.

I'm going to the Neurologist's office to have it done a different one from the first one so hope I'll be able to tolerate it this time. I'm pleased that the Neurologist is a female but doesn't mean she has a more gentle touch but I hope so. LOL

My Dr. didn't want to do an MRI unless there was a change in my EMG. I wish I could just have the MRI to see if there's any changes instead but I guess this test will show more? Wish me luck my test is Jan. 12.

I wonder why I didn't have surgery when I had a herniated disc at L5-S1 especially because the EMG showed I had nerve compression? I wonder if this next emg will make a difference if I'll ever get surgery and by then will it be too late for a compressed nerve for 3 years?
Thanks. Charry

Good Luck

I hope all goes well for you with the EMG.
Three years of nerve compression does seem like a long time. I wonder if the damage would be reversible after that much time. Frustrating!!

Hi Charry

I hope that this EMG goes better for you. I've never had one but I've heard how painful they can be. Just the thought gets me. I'm with you in that I don't see why they can't just give you the MRI especially since you had so much difficulty with the last EMG.

When I first saw my NS that did my surgery he told me that he wouldn't put me through another myelogram since I'd had so much trouble from the first one. Another gold star for him in my book!

I hope that you won't have any permanent damage after having to wait so long. Good luck Charry. I hope this test goes great and you can finally get some answers and help for your pain. You're such a great person who is always here for everyone else. Hey, you deserve a gold star too my friend.

Best of luck,
Debbie

Charry

I wanted to wish you all the best with your EMG. I hope that it goes a lot better than your last and does not cause you the pain of the first one. I hope that you can get some answers to any questions that you may have. I will be hoping and praying for you that they find a way to give you relief after so many years of compression and pain.

I will be

saying prayers for you,Charry. Angel I've had L4/5 S1
nerve compression for about 6 years now,so I can understand the frustration. I have no nerve damage after all that time. Just can't walk sometimes, but it passes quickly. I'll pray you have a gentle test,as I did my last one. Just inner calf was painful for me. You seem like a very kind, caring person and deserve the best!

Hi Charry

I hope the test went OK. I had the EMG test a few weeks ago and just got my results. The MRI didn't show anything first of all but after getting the EMG results they were able to go back to the MRI and see a tear in my disc. You should make sure you have a discussion with your Dr about you having an MRI as it could help back up the results. Also afterwards find out what your options are as a way of going ahead with Nerve block injections or perhaps surgery. I'm hoping for surgery but don't know at this time as the specialist is so in demand i can't get anything out of him at the moment. Just sitting and waiting.

Good luck. Smile

Thanks Mer and everyone

Mer thanks for letting me know that about your MRI showing the tear, will ask the Neurologist today if he thinks I need one also...

I have to go today in 1-1/2 hours from now at noon. Not looking forward to this EMG but will try to get through it. Still wondering if I should take mild sedation? Will post after I get home. Thanks for prayers or positive thoughts. Charry

This Neurologist interviewed

This Neurologist interviewed me about everything and I couldn't remember the names of 2 Drs and she said but you're an RN? I said that was 3 years ago I can't remember the names of Drs I saw once. Ridiculous! Then she says she needs more information because my case is complex. I don't understand as she's supposed to do the EMG why would I have to go back. I think she was an hour late with the patient before me she just wanted to put it off. Why does she need to know what the other EMG and MRIs said? What a waste of my time then my husband said he can't pick me up and I wasted his time and he wanted to carry some homemade bread over to my Father so I took the bus home.

Also my husband found out he didn't have collision insurance after getting our car smashed up by a drunk and our car was a write off and then our new 2007 car was hit 2 days later by taxi and now with insurance says we have no collision insurance! That's ridiculous of course we thought we were insured because he said he wanted everything all inclusive on the car and they're saying we didn't have collision. My husband is so angry he's swearing and even cursing me out for buying this house. I think he's flipped out!. Vent vent. Charry

Oh Charry

Wow, I'm sorry for you, you are having a bad bad day (except I just posted about you getting accepted Yeah!) Don't get either why they needed to know so much info about previous doctor's names and MRI's. Then insurance problems on top of it all. Whew You really are in need of some good luck. I am sending positive vibes your way. Hang in there, it's got to get better. You are in my thoughts.
